BEWARE: Driver and 2 Students Ticketed for Hitchhiking

hitchikingPHOTO: A driver and two students were ticketed last night for hitchhiking. The driver says he pulled over to the side of the road on New Hampshire Avenue last night to pick up two boys from a local school, when he was pulled over by police.

The driver says he, and both students were issued summonses for the incident.

The statue (title :39) provides that they have to be in the roadway in order to be in violation of the law. Standing on the sidewalk or on the curb is permitted.

hitchhiking locationTLS went down to the location of the incident, New Hampshire Avenue and Pinehurst Drive, and found that there are no sidewalks on either side of the road. Coming from Route 88, the sidewalk only begins approximately 500 feet north of that location, at Woodlake Country Club.

Attached is a photo of the violation.

  1. Hence;
    Bussing must be provided for all students.
    If the Board of Education cant afford it then it is a issue of the US Homeland Security. The Government in Eretz Yisroel (Israel) gave 400 Million shekel – about 1.25 Million USD – to provide bussing and stop the hitchhiking, so as we are in post 9/11 era, can our Security agencies step in on the matter here in The USA.
    Should we all buy Bicycles – also not safe on 50 mph roads as new hamp. or is it time for mass transit; Limihadrin – no Taruvos of course.
    Hashem Yishmireinu!

  2. I remember like 15 years ago when i was hitching up forest ave when Lakewood was a smaller community and the police where a little friendlier capt Wayne pulled over and asked where i was going .. and gave me a hitch up forest ave

  3. 39:4-65. Letting off or taking on persons
    No operator of a vehicle shall stop the vehicle on the highway for the purpose of letting off or taking on a person, other than at the curb or side of the road or highway, or knowingly permit a person to alight from or enter upon the vehicle while it is in motion.

  4. “…old lakewood says: “At the curb or side of road” is permitted…”

    Yes, provided that the vehicle is not blocking traffic or partially in the roadway. Many, many people, however, stop with their car partially in the roadway, blocking traffic, make sudden stops without signaling etc.

  5. I mentioned the danger of hitch hiking and the lovely citizens of Lakewood still in the roadway when picking up and got moderated out.

  6. sounds like the town went through this several years back……the key is education not mass blanket enforcement. no points to either driver or hitchhiker

  7. They should not be hitchhiking . If some wants to stop an offer a ride ( chesed) , then fine ( off to side of road not obstructing traffic ). Let’s not make excuses. The police have a hard enough job to do ( let’s not bring Rashi and the Meforshem into this) . Not to mention the example in Eretz Yisroel is frightening . . . my 2 cents worth

  8. besides… the ticket looks fake. Why is the violation written direct on this ticket whe everthing else looks like the carbon copy??
