Beginning August 1st, NJ Drivers Will No Longer Require Vehicle Inspections For Mechanical Defects

motor-vehicle-commission-New Jersey drivers will no longer be required to have their vehicles inspected for mechanical defects beginning Aug. 1, a move expected to save $12 million a year. New Jersey will be among 30 states that don’t perform the mechanical inspections. Neighboring New York and Pennsylvania still do the inspections.

The decision was announced today by the state Motor Vehicle Commission, which initially set a July 1 target for dropping the mechanical inspections, but needed more time to renegotiate with Parsons Corp., the vendor that provides the inspections.

Emissions testing will continue to be done on vehicles 5 years and older. Previously, emissions testing was done for vehicles 4 years and older. Full Story in Star Ledger.

  1. No way i was just down there yesterday and i got rejected for one of my blinkers not working what should i do now fix it or just leave it and go back after Aug 1

  2. This is a total mishegas. To save a few bucks, the legislator and Gov Christie are  eliminating a good law.

It is undisputed that many cars weigh in at 4,000 lbs.  Therefore to propose no mechanical inspections is insane.

IMHO mechanical inspection was a gr8 idea and if you don’t believe me, please read comment #1.

To commentator #1  if the blinker is broken, FIX IT it’s for your and my safety.

Oh of course emmissions gotta remain because of the environental lobby. But the guy who crashes into you because he got no blinker aw shucks. At least the environment is ok.

In summary, to propose that NJ get rid of inspections in this economy is a bad idea. Some People will buy shmateh cars and not fix it.

    Just my opinion.

  3. I along with many disagree with you.

Majority of people when they have an issue they correct it. Don’t use a poor example like #1. The inspection process has been a nuisance a reason for police to give you a ticket. Its almost like saying, people have drowned, therefore outlaw swimming.

Give me and the rest of NJ residents a break and lets try to fix the fiscal state of NJ instead of upholding useless legislation!!

  4. the operative word is MECHANICAL and the law goes into effect august 1st. you can still get a summons for lights, blinkers, obstructed view, etc.

  5. So now the police will be enforcing car safety why?

Right now maybe 1 in 100 has broken taillamps and bad blinkers. In those rare instances we have our dedicated police  doing their job and advising people of their deficiencies either via ticket or warning.

However, In my opinion if you eliminate mechanichal inspections, it will be more like 25 in 100.  That is not smart.  Keep the present law as is, so that if your blinker is broken you find out while going thru inspection Instead of being pulled over.

But hey the state is broke so let’s throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Drive around Lakewood. Is this a good law? Answer honestly.

IS eliminating mechanical inspections a good law. Yes or no? Be honest. Here in Lakewood.

Even brand new Honda Odyseies have their over head brakelights out and if you eliminate inspections, who will fix it? Who will know?

    Inspections keep cars safe.
Is it annoying waiting in line especially on route 70?  Are they nitpicky of course yes, but what is the eitza?

If you drive an old car and you are not careful about maintenance how will you know if Its broke?

    And to #5 I say:

While both me and you seem to care since we actually keep our cars maintained.

But, do you really believe that most people are like me and you?

    Point to ponder.

  6. to # 5 it is a useless pain in the neck law. if u have a violation u will get a ticket eventually. Is there a lower accident rate in states that dont have these laws? doubt it

  7. if you get in your car, start it and drive, without ever checking tire tread, lights, or anything else for that matter…good luck, you deserve everything you get. not only should you check to make sure the baby seat is properly installed… don’t forget the baby! for pete’s sake take some responsibility.

  8. I just went for my overdue inspection in June and wasn’t passed because of some “stoplights” that weren’t working. Now I know that my lights were all working because I had someone check them before I went for my inspection. I don’t think it is fair that I now have to still pass my inspection when I could have waited until August and then it wouldn’t have mattered. (the law is that if you failed your inspection before Aug. 1, you still have to reinspect your car. )

  9. Inspections in NJ are only once every two years. The need for people to fix their lights and blinkers etc. just for inspection doesn’t do much to improve the mechanical function of most people’s cars. If their lights go out the week after inspection, they got 2 full years before they look at it. Your tires need to be checked more than every 24 months too.

But to be fair, how should one know that their lights are out? When I drive I am inside my car and not everyone thinks to look to see if the passing cars or objects on the side of the road are flashing from their blinkers. Before getting upset, think that maybe it just happened or that they don’t know.
