Bad Traffic Camera in Toms River to Blame for Traffic Backups

Askonim tell TLS they were recently made aware of severe rush hour traffic backups in the area of the traffic light on Vermont Avenue, affecting drivers coming from Toms River to Lakewood.

Officials were contacted to investigate the issue, and it turns out it was a technical issue causing the traffic at the light.

“We found a bad camera at Vermont/Locust that was causing traffic to be backed up,” a County official stated.

The camera was replaced during Chol Hamoed, and officials say they will keep an eye on it to ensure the traffic conditions are corrected.

  1. The traffic camera in question is not like a red light camera which is designed to give tickets. It is a camera that determines the timing of the lights based on the traffic it sees. The camera was malfunctioning and failing to detect that there was a lot of traffic. If it was working properly It would have allowed a longer green for that traffic. Once the camera is fixed it should automatically be adjusting the lights to clear up traffic backups once again.
