Attention Parents: Keep children off partially-frozen Lake; Use safety pond

Officials are advising parents to alert their children about the dangers of playing on the partially-frozen Lake Carasaljo.

Despite it appearing frozen, the lake can actually have only a thin layer of ice at the surface, giving it a frozen appearance and giving children a false sense of security. Falling through the ice into the frigid water temperatures can prove fatal.

There is a designated safety pond for children to play on, located just off South Lake Drive.

    • On S Lake right when you turn on fro Rt 9 & Central. It’s called ‘safety’ becasue it’s only 1 foot deep; no running water, so freezes easily. Is also used for ice-hockey.

    • Ah, the Saftey Pond. I can still remember skating with my Mom in the 60’s on that pond. It’s a wonderful time Yitz, definitely do it.

  1. And, especially now that the lake is frozen all teh way to the spillway by Rt 9, special cation must be used, becasue one can walk literally untill that ‘waterfall’. (It has been below freezing for several days straight).

  2. Another few suggestions: People will soon be crossing the lake at this rate.
    – It is probably not a good idea to walk alone on any part of lake
    – walk single file with one person 10-20 feet ahead of the other
    – if edges are defrosted, NEVER EVER try to jump onto ice; serious fractures an occur (of the bones, that is, Heaven forbid)!
-After a rain, the ice melts and gets weakened, new testing must be done to see if it is strong
-Use much common sense in different areas; near the stream along Rt 9 is usually melted, as it is running water (but at this time is frozen solid!)
