At least one Lakewood school postpones open due to lack of busing

bus lkwd tlsAt least one Lakewood school will be pushing off their start date due the lack of busing, TLS has learned.

The girls elementary school was to begin Wednesday but will instead start Thursday so parents have one less day of carpooling.

Some parents we spoke to weren’t too excited about the decision, while others felt all schools should postpone the openings until busing begins.

As earlier reported, all busing is expected to begin by next week. Some schools will begin this week.

  1. what? there are plenty of cities that don’t have bussing all year and have school from 830am to 430pm. Why is this town being run by a bussing schedule?

  2. The schools are doing this cuz Wednesday is a half day,to make parents bring children to school and then pick up 2 hrs later and sit in traffic and do the same on Thursday and Friday is crazy so…they gave the parents a brake…

  3. What is wrong with BOE ? What about planning ahead bussing advance so driver can get student in day one on time not lost . This is crazy system. I dislike the idea that school begin without bussing. It unfair for parents who worked hard on summer basic and getting kids back to school is little break for the parents. From driving them all summer. I hope everyone agree with me

  4. To all those questioning which school this is; it seems obvious that the scoop doesn’t want to be the one making the announcement for this school. They probably did not yet publicize their decision.

  5. Frank – other towns infrastructure can handle the parents driving . Chicago, Toronto, Baltimore don’t have the same amount of Jews per square mile with the same number of kids. Serious congestion in lkwd!

  6. It’s the only sensible solution at this time. Without bussing, we’re gonna spend most of the morning dropping off children and picking them up within a 2 hour time frame! Not to mention the traffic, the beeping, the school zone.not very conducive for a first day of school.

  7. To genius: it was publicized to all the parents of the school via text message and robotic call. How’s that for secrecy?! Whoever needs to know, knows. And I hope other schools follow.. so I can actually stay home instead of witnessing the commotion. (Think: route 9, pine st, oak st, cross st, county line, Clifton ave.)

  8. you mentioned there shouldn’t be school until there is bussing and that is insane and irresponsible.
take your kids to school if there isn’t a bus ride.

  9. People are being harsh, and negative. This is a less than ideal situation, and I believe that whichever way the decision would have gone, there would be complaints that way also. Some people just like finding the negative in situations. As a family member of a teacher, having a half day on Wednesday with students being dropped off until 9:20, and pickup being at 11:15, it’s not the right way to start off the year.

  10. My boys’ and girls’ schools have busing on Wednesday, and they’re most probably not the only 2 schools that have busing, so traffic won’t be as terrible as it is when no schools have busing.

  11. Mordekai – goodness gracious! I agree your children need to be in school 364 days a year! I do not see how extra lessons have helped at home all summer! The bussing is no longer the responsibility of the Lakewood Board of Education. Please contact the LTA.

  12. Just wondering…will there ever come a time that this town gets their act together? Such as, bussing starting on the first day of the year and ending on the last? And without hearing about it the whole year?

  13. Which schools have busses tomorrow? Also in the video he says that some schools are starting early to help open up busses. Which schools are these. Just curious.

  14. Just a suggestion to the girls schools. Instead of not opening tomorrow why don’t you switch back to the regular half day time of 9-12 (and on Fridays until bussing starts) Since the day was only cut shorter due to the bus situation…

  15. The problem isn’t so much with busing as it is with congestion. If this town would be like a normal town, driving kids to school would be relatively quick and painless.

In Lakewood, a 2 mile commute on a day with no bussing can easily take over an hour.

Just wait till all the planned developments on Vine, Oak, Prospect, Massachusetts, Cross etc, are built. It won’t just be route 9 that is a parking lot. It will be the side streets as well, people won’t be able to get out of their driveways.
