After the recent thefts of prescription drugs from homes, Assemblyman Ronald S. Dancer is proposing background checks for home inspectors assessing property values for a municipality.
Dancer, R-Ocean, Burlington , Middlesex and Monmouth, plans to introduce legislation this month requiring criminal background checks for any firm or individual contracted by a municipality to conduct revaluations in private homes.
“Personal homes and property deserve respect and we must minimize the risk of theft during revaluations,” Dancer said. “When a town sends a contractor into homes, there should be a basic level of precaution to prevent incidents like this.”
Dancer began drafting legislation after a home inspector in Palmyra was charged in August with stealing prescription medications from two homes. After several weeks, the borough resumed inspections with several new safety conditions imposed on the appraisal firm, including criminal background checks.
“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” Dancer said, referring to the famous Benjamin Franklin quote. “This episode should also serve as a reminder that in our homes, we all have to take precautions to prevent against the theft and abuse of prescription drugs, whether by strangers, family members or guests.” TLS.
Sounds like the code enforcement department, needs some of their own ‘code enforcement’. What a waste of tax payer money!
