The state Assembly Republican Policy committee is probing the issue, which is always in the backdrop of the state’s political world. The hearing comes as a gubernatorial election ramps up, pitting former corruption-busting U.S. Attorney Chris Christie, a Republican, against Democratic incumbent Jon Corzine. Republicans contend Corzine has not done enough to stop corruption, though he has not been implicated in any scandal. Forty-four people were charged last month in a wide-ranging New Jersey corruption probe. Some were public officials, including lawmakers and mayors. AP
