Agudath Israel Of New Jersey Action Alert

josh pruz at rally trentonTime is running out to get the Opportunity Scholarship Act, S-1872 & A-2810, passed before the summer recess. This Bill, if passed by the Legislature and signed into Law by the Governor, will provide Corporate Tax Scholarships for qualifying families who reside in Districts with Failing Public Schools. The law was designed to split the scholarships into two categories, 75% will be earmarked for current Public School Students attending a Failing Public School, and 25% for students who live in a Failing School District but are currently enrolled in a Non-Public School. The reason why Non Public School students are eligible is because their parents should not be penalized for already making the financial
sacrifice to send their child to a Non Public School.

Three communities with significant Orthodox Jewish populations will be eligible for these Scholarships – Lakewood, Passaic and Elizabeth. This Bill might not be the ultimate solution to our tuition issues but it is a great first step. In the words of Rev. Reginald Jackson of the Black Minister’s Council at a Press Conference yesterday – we can’t take the second step without taking the first one. This is a crucial first step for our community and all of us, regardless of where we live and if we would be eligible, should do our share to help pass this Bill.

  1. Has anyone figured out where the money is going to come from to fund this BILL? I know, raise the school taxes to pay for it! Then cut the school budget to keep the tax rate down, until the public schools run out of money. This bill is not well thought out.

  2. It is coming from corporations who get a tax credit . The corporate tax credit will be offset by the savings per pupil . every pupil who is in the public schools costs the taxpayer approx 13000 to 19000 depending on the district . The tax credits are only for 6000 per elementary school student . This savings will more than offset any cost to the taxpayer . There will be a net saving to the Nj taxpayer at the end of the day . Its a pilot program so give it a chance to prove itself work . If the facts show that we wewr wrong ,then dont continue it after the test period

  3. Can someone tell me if this passes will tuition go down for us? or will the school just say “it really cost more then what you pay anyway” can someone tell me.

  4. So, if you are already in a privet school, you want to be able to apply for this scholarship, how will this save any money for the public school system? Seems to me that it will just add $6000.00 per student to the system that doesn’t have the money.

  5. It will be for private and public. If you actually read the information you would realize it’s not coming from the “system”, it’s coming as a tax credit from corporations.

  6. 75 % of the funds are dedicated for existing public school tudents .

And your tuition will not increase . The schools is requred to take the voucher as full payment for any tuition so whover gets it will pay ZERO tuition
