Agudah NJ’s Rabbi Avi Schnall on the Lakewood/Jackson busing development

As first reported on TLS yesterday, the Jackson Board of Education will be busing its Lakewood school children with their own buses, and nixing the aid-in-lieu.

Agudah New Jersey Director Rabbi Avi Schnall gave TLS the following statement on the development:

We commend the Jackson Board of Ed for their willingness to provide transportation to their many residents whose children attend non public schools. It shows the determination of the BOE to service their residents in the most efficient way.

We would like to point out some important information that all Jackson residents should be aware of.

First, Jackson BOE will not be providing buses for all children. They will start with a few schools that have a larger student body residing in Jackson and will attempt to add more by combining schools with a smaller student body In Jackson. It is very possible that the majority of children in Jackson will not be starting off the year with transportation provided by Jackson BOE.

Those students that will not be receiving BOE transportation are still entitled to their Aid in Lieu.

The routes and stops have not been finalized. There is no guarantee that you will receive a stop on your block or even within a few blocks of your house.

Most importantly, this is a major undertaking on the part of Jackson BOE and we need to recognize that it will take time. Patience is prudent.

With cooperation and proper communication this can be a success. But we need to mindful that there will be growing pains and challenges.

Again, we commend the Jackson BOE for taking this bold step.

  1. Thank you R Avi for clarifying this important subject….thank you Jackson’s team for giving this your best ..we know that together we can make this happen…

  2. I hope they stop at my front door to pick up my children like they do in Lakewood. Why should my children have to walk any distance.

    • My children go to public school and we live on a cul-de-sac and they need to walk to end of the street, my children walk to a corner unless they live on the busy road–

    • Most children in Jackson, both public and private, walk to a bus stop. My kids have always walked up the block to the corner, I did when I was a child also. Unless you live on a major road walking up the block should not be an issue.

    • i doubt they will and they shouldn’t have to. different town, but my kids walk to the end of our street for their bus stop because we’re a dead end street. they’ll be fine if they have to walk.

  3. To make it the same.

I wouldn’t hold my breath for that . Jackson is rural and people walk. That’s why you moved ,to he in a rural place ,not in a city .

  4. Walk? You’re lucky that your child only has to walk to the bus stop. We drive our children one and a half miles until over the Lakewood border so they can get on their school bus. Any upgrade is received with gratitude for us.

  5. don’t be selfish and pls understand how this works…i have heard the the transportation dept is working hard in this and give credit where credit is due!!! even if it takes time to work through it is a positive benefit for ALL Jackson tax payers and our children…

    • Yup, thank you! I think people respond strongly because it is these kinds of comments that are used to show that we are greedy, entitled, inconsiderate, etc. So let’s call out the troll and let’s show that this is not how the majority feels…

  6. The troll doesn’t feel that way either . He knoes its a inconsiderate comment and Its just a way to create controversy and have people respond angrily . Some people sit back and enjoy that .

  7. Jackson has existing safe bus stops at almost every corner.
Why shouldn’t they use them for our private school kids? There is no time and no need to reinvent the wheel.
I’m very happy about this major undertaking and would like to thank Susan, Mary and the Board of Ed for being considerate to ALL Jackson taxpaying families.
    Proud to live here!
