Agudah NJ Director Rabbi Avi Schnall: Now is the time for tefillah, introspection, and action

Dear Friends, It’s with a heavy heart that I send this email.

The Pittsburgh tragedy left us reeling. Along with the pain felt by our entire nation, we are once again reminded of the need to do our utmost Hishtadlus to protect our shuls, our yeshivos, and the children attending those yeshivos, who are perhaps most vulnerable. As we’ve unfortunately seen yet again, our most vulnerable institutions are often chosen as targets for unspeakable crime and devastation.

Now is the time for tefillah, introspection, and action.

Currently, security funding for non-public schools is severely lacking, leaving our children at risk.

Assemblyman Gary Schaer and Senator Vin Gopal introduced Bills A4597 and S3080, which would increase security funding for non-public schools, namely, our Yeshivos, by $11.3 Million statewide. This funding would allow our yeshivos to hire proper security guards and increase target hardening and other security measures to properly protect our children.

It is imperative that the Legislature understand how important and necessary this bill is to us.

In the aftermath of this horrible tragedy, we encourage all to do our Hishtadlus, to reach out to our legislative leaders and express how important and necessary this funding is.

Please take just one moment of your time and click here to contact Senator Sweeney and here for Assemblyman Coughlin.

Let us do our part.

Avi Schnall

  1. …and with the money, we need enforcement! Someone’s gotta come check to make sure that the security grants are being used properly & that every school is a safe place for our children.

  2. this is confusing. does anyone know what was going on in that temple when the meshigina ym’sh came in shooting. A bris! Who were the parents? A daddy and a daddy!!!!! We are acting as if these were the holiest of holy kedoshim.

    • Unfortunately it is a rachmunos on you that you have no idea what these yiddin are like. I was at a dinner in the social hall of that shul for a kollel a few years back and there was approximately 1000 reform and conservative yiddin showed up to support the jewish cause and gave nice money. They do the best of what they know in terms of Judaism and they unfortunately did not receive yet the education that you did. Think of it this way – despite not know very much or having so much attachment to Judaism- they still come to shul every week to feel closer to hashem. I think you ought to consider whether you would do that being in their place or not and please ask mechila. The majority of the people there did not come for this event anyway rather for shul services. Please consider this
