After Days of Monitoring, TLS Purchases Shaimos Found Abandoned in Lakewood; Askonim Step in To Assist with Burial, and Track Down Culprit [EXCLUSIVE]

Since Friday afternoon, TLS reporters have been busy with Shaimos found abandoned at a storage facility in Lakewood.

TLS was made aware by Dave of Ari’z Car Rental that a storage garage has been found with abandoned Shaimos inside, and was up for auction.

Apparently, a non-legitimate Shaimos collector had taken money from people to bury their Shaimos, but then dumped it into a storage facility instead.

As soon as we were made aware of what was happening, TLS reporter Ben M. on behalf of TLS immediately placed a bid on the storage unit, and kept it under wraps to ensure others don’t just bid on it for the kicks of it or out of curiosity of what the bags may contain.

Today, TLS reporter Szmidty was made aware by Schulgasser Bros. Moving about a second unit containing Shaimos. Ben M immediately placed a bid on that one as well.

Moments ago, we won both bids, and have taken possession of the abandoned items.

Committeeman and Askan Menashe Miller, who was notified about the situation, immediately worked with police to track down the person who allegedly dumped the Shaimos in those lockers.

The person responsible for the fiasco agreed to pay for the expenses involved in burying the Shaimos, as well as any other expenses involved.

TLS and Menashe Miller then got in touch with a large Shaimos company, run by Aaron Taplin of Capital Seforim, and were able to secure a wholesale price tag on proper burial for the Shaimos.

Efforts are now also underway to ensure all Shaimos collectors are qualified and are under property Rabbinical supervision.

UPDATE: As a result of this fiasco, TLS will no longer be accepting any Shaimos ads which are not under Rabbinical supervision.

  1. Wow!!!! What a story!

    Ben, Szmidty, Dave!

PSA: Always give ur Shaimos to Taplin/Capital Seforim….even if u have to pay a bit more, they are reliable, honest and will actually bury ur Shaimos! (Or sell it) (And they have 2 locations one in Howell and one in south Lakewood!

  2. B”H I live in a large community where Shaimos isn’t a business. A few orgs here take on the Holy task of collection & burial of Shaimos as a free service to the klal to make sure it’s done properly.

  3. Hashem Yishmor.
This is a real meis mitzvah.
It’s saddening that people would do this. Thank you to all the individuals bringing this shaimos to kevurah.
May it be a zechus for all of us and for an end to tzarosenu.

  4. A Rov proficient in the halach regarding shaimos should offer guidance on what needs to be done with all the papers, magazines, pamphlets that are widely distributed containing divrei Torah and possibly shaimos.

  5. Thank you so much to the Lakewood Scoop and the other Askanim for taking care of this matter.
Lakewood: What a beautiful town with such wonderful people.

  6. Any coincidence that this was discovered 2 days after the Manalapan Chinese Fiasco? We need a better communal oversight system taking responsibility for the spiritual welfare of this city. Hashgocha processes of all kinds need to be reviewed & upgraded. Lakewood is no longer a sleepy Yeshiva town, this is a full size city that comes with all its blessings & challenges.

  7. Goose Gossage is very thankful for this recovery and in accordance with Uncle Choel has decided to celebrate by gathering all the heroes to the town square for a ceremony and give each a cake.

(Maybe we’ll even pie them in the face!)
