A Picture With A Big Message

kids running on county line pic editedPHOTO: The attached photo is a screenshot of a reader-submitted video clip which was taken this morning by a motorist driving along County Line Road, near Apple Street. The video shows three young children -apparently headed to a bus stop – running along the stretch of County Road, which does not have a sidewalk, and only a several-inch shoulder at some points.

The video is not being posted so as not to disclose the identity of the children.

The photo however, should speak for itself and serve as a reminder to parents, that the slightest ‘trip and fall’ by these vulnerable young children, can G-d forbid prove fatal. TLS-CCP.

  1. I saw them standing at the corner of County and Park Ave and they looked like they were trying to cross.
I was hoping that they were waiting for a bus or a prearranged ride there.

  2. I had to walk to Clifton Avenue Grade School, Princeton Avenue School, Lakewood Middle & High School as a kid what is the big problem. There were alot of children in the past that had to walk to school, the transportation bill was never as high as it is now. The School board should look at the distance of where the child lives and where the school is in order to evaluate wheter the child or children require transportation services. This evaluation may help reduce the transportation budget.

  3. Where are the parents? It is their responsibility to make sure their children are safe. I drove my children to their bus stops and waited till the bus got there or I drove them to school myself. Don’t pawn the rrsponsibility of your children on someone else or the BOE. It is your responsibility

  4. make a choice sidewalks or busing, either way tax money will pay for it. sidewalks are a one time expense, busing is every year. teach the children how to walk to be safe, and teach the parents not to drive like nuts and all will be safe.

  5. Yes, 30 years ago my kids also could walk to school quite a distance as traffic was almost non existent. But, now it is mamash a sakuno to walk, even for adults!

  6. Its incredible that the county put in a multy million dollar upgrade to CL rd and they couldn’t go another 200ft to meet up with the sidewalk behind the old agway

  7. why is anyone surprised? street safety seems to not be a priority in many areas of lakewood. i.e. small toddlers left outside unattended, children in developments running helter-skelter and dozens of young boys riding their bikes daily to school without helmets. this picture portrays just the tip of the problem!

  8. This is a very important reminder that it is ILLEGAL to PASS on the shoulder. The Penalty is a 4 POINT moving violation. “Never pass on the right shoulder of the road. This is against the law. (N.J.S.A. 39:4-85)”

The reason for what seems to be a “tough” punishment? The shoulder is to be used by pedestrians, parked cars, disabled cars, etc. It is not meant for passing a vehicle turning left, unless instructed to do so by an officer. Also, when someone does pass on the shoulder, they risk hitting another car that is following the law by staying in the proper lane. You also risk hitting a parked car, and worst of all, you risk hitting a person.

  9. NO! I am not paying anymore of my tax dollars for sidewalks when the ones we have are NEVER used. How many more millions of dollars will we spend putting sidewalks in and people still walk in the street. Every time they add sidewalks to a road I still have to dodge people walking in the street when theres a sidewalk 5ft to the right or left. E.G. Miller road had sidewalks added a few years back and people still don’t ever seem to use them.
