9th Street and Clifton Avenue to Become 4-Way Stop

9 cliftonThe intersection of 9th Street and Clifton Avenue – an intersection used by thousands of pedestrians daily – will soon become a 4-way stop. The intersection is also notorious for accidents.

During the Lakewood Police Department’s pedestrian crossing initiative, officers stopped over 200 vehicles in a 3 hours span for failing to yield to pedestrians at the busy intersection.

The reccomondations for 4-way stops generally come from Lakewood’s Traffic & Safety division, which conducts studies for each application. The studies include crash stats, traffic congestion and more.

The Township will submit the change for its first reading during the next Township Committee meeting. [TLS]

  1. Four-way stops are not a good solution for heavy traffic areas. Just look at princeton/7th and monmouth/7th, traffic is a lot worse there now.
The township seems to think that 4-way stop is a cure-all for traffic, because it worked on Park Ave. But it worked park Ave it because it came to solve a different problem – bad visibility, and Park is not nearly as busy as princeton/monmouth/clifton.

  2. I don’t know what these commenters are hocking about. i live in this area and I think the 4 way stop is the best idea ever thought of especially in this town
without it u could wait hours and even DAYS before u could get across. This endless waiting was the cause of the majority of the accidents. Now at least u have a chance of getting thru

  3. I would suggest putting at every intersection in Lakewood 4 way stop signs. They slow down all the speeding dangerous drivers. Less accidents. Safer for pedestrian.Cheap to install. If it doesn’t work easy remove. We need 4 way stop on forest 7,6,5,4,3,2,10,11,12

    Clifton on 5,6,7,8,9,10,11,Carey,Courtney,

squankem and Princeton brook and ridge 7 Somerset and 7 park and 2 etc…

  4. put 4 way at every corner-Have you ever tried going through a town with a stop sign on every corner?? It is ludicris it will take you over an hour to get anyplace in this town ..what are you thinking? or are you thinking? That is just crazy

  5. 4 way stops by definition create more overall traffic. Simple math – 4 cars instead of 2 cars stopped = double the traffic.
That’s why in highly congested areas it causes more traffic instead of alleviating.

  6. I live on Clifton a few blocks away. I’ve observed the dangerous chaos in other parts of town due to the 4 way stops. In addition after the initial police crackdown on pedestrian crossing violations open season on pedestrians began again without a cop in sight. Every third intersection should have traffic lights. I’ve noticed that during any given LKPD shift easily a dozen police cars sit unused in the police pkg lot…how about parking a handful unmanned along the main streets? I’m sure that will make drivers cautious to the point that they don’t use their cell phones or text both of which are reaching epidemic proporortions

  7. I live on Clifton Avenue too. Making the intersection a four way stop isn’t going to solve the problem. The drivers coming from Madison already have a stop sign on the corner, but they can’t see cars coming from County Line because the school buses parked on Clifton between 9th and 10th are blocking their view. The best solution is a traffic light.

  8. Hey berel
They stopped it on oak a while ago because it wasn’t working. Shows how much your paying attention. Anyway 4 way Stop is the dumbest idea &the original guy who thought of it should have been fired a long time ago.

  9. It’s really a shame. This is the most terrible idea ever!!! I’ve witnessed traffic, both pedestrian and automobile, in this area. There will be more accidents and injuries. A traffic light and camera would be essential to witness who will be at fault and who left the scene. Maybe ’round the clock crossing guards???
