3 Lakewood Men Arrive Home i Manhattan Late Friday Night After Mayor Miller, LPD and State Police Spring Into Action

EXCLUSIVE: Three Lakewood men working in Manhattan arrived home late Friday night after getting stuck in 9/11 security checkpoint traffic, TLS has learned. The three – a father, son and son-in law – left Manhattan early Friday afternoon not expecting more than the usual traffic.

But that wasn’t the case on this 9/11 weekend.

The group were held up by several 9/11 security checkpoints, delaying their trip, and quickly realized they may not make it back to Lakewood before Shabbos.

As Shabbos quickly approached, the men hurried down the Parkway, hoping to still make it home before the Zman.

However, The Zman was quickly approaching, and the men – Still only at exit 105 – phoned home, and told their wives they would have to begin Shabbos without them.

Desperately hoping to arrive as close to home as possible, the men continued down the Parkway, realizing they would have to walk the remaining distance.

Back at home, Shabbos came, and the men – who hadn’t eaten all day – didn’t arrive home.

Shortly after the Zman, a friend of the family walked to the home of Mayor Menashe Miller, to see what could be done.

The Mayor immediately sprung into action to see to it that these men be brought home.

Mayor Miller walked over to the home of the families, ensuring them he would do whatever possible to bring their husbands home.

The Mayor then met up with a Lakewood Police Officer and passed along the information, and then returned to be with the families.

The Officer, the shift supervisor, made it his responsibility to find the residents, and offered to make his way to exit 105 in attempt to locate the stranded parties.

The Shabbos LCSW unit, who also responded to the home, was sent to search up Squankum Road.

The men however, were not found at the rest stop area where they were assumed to be, and the officer began searching the area for a stranded car or walking men, as per the advice of his Superior, who also remained with the families.

After searching the area – including local Hotels – for some time, the officer and the LCSW member – made their way back to the Mayor and reported that they were unable to locate the men.

By this time, the State Police and local Police Departments were contacted, in hopes of locating the parties who may be walking the 18 miles from the exit. The Lieutenant did just that.

However, after searching for some time, the men were not found.

At about 10:00 PM, Mayor Miller, who had still not made Kiddush, said he would return shortly.

However, at about 10:25 PM, the men – hungry and exhausted – walked into their home.

They relayed to their families, that they managed to make it to exit 91 off the Parkway at Shkiah, and parked their car with their belongings, on the side of the road.

After about a three hour walk, the men spent the remainder of the peaceful Shabbos back home.

I agree with frank, post #2…. the lesson here is to leave work early “L’Kavod Shabbos”.

To post #1… I may be understanding your post incorrectly, but i certainly don’t think it’s called “mesiras nefesh” not to drive a car on Shabbos. I would think that would be natural for any Yid on Shabbos.

They should have left the city much earlier. They walked way too far on Shabbos. (moderated) they should have known security was going to be extra tight this weekend. Chaveirim would have gotten them home on time. They could have driven to Deal where they would’ve been welcomed with open arms. (Deal is exit 105.) But Mayor Miller was amazing and the LPD deserves a round of applause for going the extra mile.

The Mayor is really devoted. Always giving support to all united states in time of need!! He refused to be at ground zero !! He would rather be in Lakewood helping people. Thanks Menash !!

Why are you publicizing this? The proper thing should have been to stop at deal for shabos. Or a half hour earlier in highland park. There is also the issur of techum shabbos. I’m not judging anyone. People panic when there is extreme pressure and can’t always think clearly, I understand hindsight is 20-20 however I don’t feel this story is a positive story to publicize. The real story to publicize is when someone realizes they won’t make it intime and stops and spends shabos in deal etc.

So your telling us that a police officer, police Lt. And members of the state police all had to stop protecting the public to search for three people who were not lost but just needed a ride.

Empathetic to a Point

1. Leave early Erev Shabbos
2. Have a Plan B and C (such as Deal) Friday Shore Traffic is always horrendous, Friday is getaway day.
3. Leave your cell phone ON in the car so at least they could…
4. Locate the car and narrow down the search.
5. Then zone in by calculating time it takes to walk from location at Shkia.
6. Mobilize NJSP Aviation.
7. Take it from there.
8. Motzei Shabbos pay back the cost to locate you, even though they didn’t find you, they sure tried the best they could, especially with all the demands on them this weekend.
9. Major Hakaros Ha Tov is in order.

My 10 cents (rounded up)

Bet that Chicken Soup was Geshmakt!! Did the supervisor get some?

This teaches us that everyone needs a Rav whom he is comfortable to call anytime.
Had they asked a Rav, they probably would have been advised to find a non-jew to drive them after sunset before the stars come out (Bein Hashmoshes). They should have parked in the rest area, left all their belongings in the car, and found someone to drive them in his or their car(for $100 dollars you can always find someone). This would have prevented more serious issues with Tchum and the like.

Raintree is just a 20 minute walk from exit 91. Please, make ur self at home we welcome any “lost or late” travelers. We can have ur families notified via the LPD officers that reside or patrol the area.

Additionally you get A’ZA KIDDUSH.

the Scoop Rocks!

That’s wierd. I met these 3 walking down E Kennedy and they went to stop and make kiddush by a friends house before the would walk the rest of the way… That was about 840 pm…

This happened to me once and I know what it feels like, u have one thing on your mind and that is: Shabbos is coming and I have to get home” nothing else. I don’t know anything about the techum and I don’t know why they didn’t stop in deal but I do know what they were going through and I hope no one should have to go through the same.(P.S I made it into city 3 min before sunset and knocked on the first jewish home and left muktze there- no shower or shave that week)
