The US Senate voted to acquit President Trump on both articles of impeachment submitted to them, clearing the president of wrongdoing after five months of investigations and hearings.
The Senate fell far short of a 2/3 majority vote to remove President Trump from office, with just one Republican Senator – Mitt Romney – voting with Democrats on one of the articles of impeachment. The final vote tally for the obstruction of justice charge was 47-53, while the abuse of power charge was voted down 48-52.
The White House released a statement claiming victory, saying that President Trump had been “completely vindicated” and that Democrats only impeached him because they know they can’t beat Trump in the 2020 election. Democrats insist that they are not done with their investigation, and have said that they will call John Bolton to testify in the House of Representatives, as they continue pursuing the Ukraine story.
