The mother of one of the students ticketed Thursday evening for hitchhiking says she feels bad for the driver, and wants to compensate him. She submitted the following letter to TLS:
“My son was one of the boys ticketed for hitch hiking this past Thursday night on New Hampshire Ave. I would like to get in touch with the driver to thank him for stopping, apologize for the inconvenience and compensate him for the fine it incurred. My son and his friend were too shell-shocked to ask his name. Please forward my phone number to the driver.”
Two students, approximately 15 years old, were ticketed in the incident, along with the driver.

It’s nice that the parent wants to compensate the driver, now for the real question…is this 15 year old going to continue hitching rides? Parents, how long before one of these rides turn tragic? There are so many things that can go wrong. Drivers pulling over, picking kids up or dropping them off unsafely is just part of the issue. How about a criminal passing themselves off as a Yid? These kids are statistics waiting to happen. Arrange rides for your kids, take more responsibility as parents.

Wow. Is the Mother of the boy available for B’rochos ? I would take my whole family to get a b’rocho from her. A real tzadeikess.
There could be designated safe places where there are sidewalks or inside a parking lot for hitchhikers, like in front Whispering Pines where people get rides to Monsey or Brooklyn. If a hitchhiker has to walk a little to get to such a spot, what’s so terrible? Walking is healthy. Maybe there ought to be a system that ID’s have to be shown by those who hitchhike and those who want to give rides. Sometimes hitchhiking may be thee only way for boys to get around if they don’t have money for a taxi, so we have to work on making it safe.
I pick up the occasional passenger. I also have sons who are absolutely forbidden from hitching rides from strangers. If they need a ride I will do my best to make myself available. Otherwise they can ride with someone they know, take a taxi, or just don’t go wherever they were going. I applaud this mother for doing the right thing after the fact, but she should not encourage her child to hitch rides with strangers to begin with.

Why do we need mehdrain separate seating public busses? What wrong with plan public busses? My rebbiem in Brooklyn, chassidisha rabbiem all took public city buses to yeshiva. And many of them still do.
As a side note mehdrian busses are probably illegal in the USA.
