FIRST REPORT: [DOCUMENTS] Judge Joseph Foster has signed the Tent City consent agreement which will ultimately bring an end to the Tent City saga, Township Attorney Michael DiCicco has confirmed to TLS.The Township has learned of the Judge’s signing of the agreement on Saturday, DiCicco said.
The consent agreement, as earlier reported, will allow for the Tent City residents to remain in the encampment until proper placement could be found for them by working with County and other officials. Permanent housing and bringing in additional residents is in breach of the agreement.
The consent agreement, says DiCicco, was put into place as a security for the parties should any furture issues arise, and enforcement would be necessary by the court.
“But we’re optomistic that that won’t be needed because everyone is striving to achieve the same goal – which is that tent city will close down and that people will be afforded housing,” DiCicco tells TLS.
Mayor Albert Akerman, who has been at the forefront at the recent Tent City negotiations, welcomed the news.
“Even Tent City residents realize that the current setup wont last forever, and that we’re not looking to leave them stranded. The news is welcoming because we”ll finally be seeing an end to Tent City and its residents will be provided shelter, at least temporarily”
Akerman says that while the encampment could be vacated as soon as a few months, it will hopefully not extend longer than one year. [TLS]
THANKS MR ALBERT! Now my brother may finally get a home! A real one!
A whole bunch of fluff! If there were other arrangements, they would have moved out 3 years ago. This a victory for tent city, not the township. The township could have arranged alternative arrangements for these people for years already, and they didn’t. So what changed? Nothing. They don’t need this agreement to find placement for the residents. Like I said; FLUFF!
They are not going anywhere just wait and you will see for yourself
I will believe it when I see it. You can just see how much it keeps growing no “agreement” will stop more people from joining.
i dont want another winter like we had with carcinogenic heavy smoke~ get them out now, it’s great moving weather! A full yr is still too long for tent city to be in existence!
Who is gonna pay to clean up the mess left behind? lots of crack pipes and beer bottles to be swept up
to jananeen, why don’t you put your brother (family) up so he has a roof over his head and can flop there? After all, isn’t that what family is for???
To #2, you are so right. Those people have been offered housing by the county previously. But there are stipulations. Any motels that would have been a winter rental are gearing up for summer now when they make their real money, not that the oodles and boodles of money social service (you and me) pays for winter rentals is anything to sneeze at.
jananeen says: THANKS MR ALBERT! Now my brother may finally get a home! A real one!
So because you are a bad sister, and refused to help her brother – its now our responsibility to find and pay for his shelter?
Its amazing how hypocritical liberals are. they are not for ‘putting their money where their mouth is’ but they are all for and magically so benevolent, when its tax dollars to be spent. nice…
Why do they need a YEAR to get them out? They should have this wrapped up in 1-2 months MAX
THere is absolutely nothing concrete her. I agree with the previous posters that this a bunch of baloney!
We still need the shelter, People will be homeless 2-3-4 years from now!!!
I can see the future “Welcome to Tent City a senior community”
One year becomes two, two becomes three, etc, etc…..
Kudos To the Mayor!!!
He’s moving this in the right direction. Its not Lakewood’s responsibility to deal with the homeless, its the responsibility of the County and the State.
not impressed. this “agreement” is pretty much what we have had until now.
this is just a silly agreement
why live in a house if you could live in a tent
theres no where for the homeless to be sent
in no time at all theyll start charging rent
the township is clearly bent
on hurting the tax payers and making a dent
were just stuck with them so dont bother to vent
TENT CITY WINS is what this agreement really meant
To Happy Camper & Mr. Conservative- Your comments are sickening and appalling. How dare you slander the first poster? You know nothing about her or her brother and to assume she’s a “hypocritical liberal”, a “bad sister” or bad family member is a disgusting accusation to make. Its comments and narrow-minded viewpoints such as yours that make this world as bad as it is. Grow up and learn some humanity.
Jananeen- why don’t you get your brother some help and then let him live in your home? how could you be so cruel to let him live in Tent City during the freezing weather ? Hurricane Sandy ? brutal heatwaves? Violent stabbings ?
You should be advocating for your brother and helping him re-enter society – not the taxpayers!
