PHOTOS & VIDEO: It took about 7 hours and about 40 volunteers for project ‘Lights On’ to be completed, and the approximate numbers are in. About 350 street lights throughout the town were found to be burnt out during last night’s operation, two of the volunteers keeping track of the clipboards tell TLS, though an exact number will not be available until later today.
Volunteers – inlcuding members from Chaveirim, LCSW and Hatzolah – equipped with flashlights, clipboards and reflective belts, canvassed the entire town between the hours of 6PM-2AM, with the last volunteer walking in at about 2:30 AM.
But he wasn’t the only one pulling in a late night.
“I am not going to sleep tonight until I know every single pole in this town has been accounted for”, Mayor Miller said last night.
Flanked by volunteers Committeeman Ray Coles, Committeeman Meir Lichtenstien and Committeeman Albert Akerman, the Mayor thanked the volunteers for coming out for the benefit of the town, and also thanked Committeeman Meir Lichtenstien who was instrumental in getting the project off the ground.
The Mayor says it was Lichtenstien’s idea to stop paying the JCP&L bill, until the town gets the cooperation from the electric company.
Committeeman Lichtenstien serves as the street light liaison for Lakewood.
Standing by at Town Hall to equip and assist volunteers, were Ace Klughaupt and Eli Gobioff.
The list of burnt out lights will now be sent to JCP&L for repair, before the Township begins paying the bills again. TLS.
And that is BESIDES all the residential areas with no lighting at all! Thanks guys!
This is true leadership, First one in and the Last one out, thank you Mayor Miller.
thanks everyone. I have one question regarding the following paragraph:
“The Mayor says it was Lichtenstien’s idea to stop paying the JCP&L bill, until the town gets the cooperation from the electric company.”
did anyone every try not paying a JCP&L bill???? what was the next step??? that’s right, THEY TURN OFF YOUR SERVICE!!!.
do we know if they won’t do this to us?
They’re dealing with a township. Not an individual homeowner who won’t have electicity. Any the negative publicity if they turned off all streetlights in Lakewood?!
i never had a problem with jcp&l
whenever i reported a light out, it was fixed within a week
we will have to do all this again to verify that they fixed them. . .
thank you
we needed this 10 years ago !
i am suprised even driving on route 9 home from yeshiva towards chestnut there are so many burnt out lights . thanks to menashe for all you have done and continue to do to make lakewood a safe place to live !!

Turning off the lights wont do anything…the lights are all out already!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
so i suppose the township has nothing better to do than worry about burnt out street lamps? could have fooled me..
I think it is a good idea
what if you faxed stuff over, late last night or early this morning will it still be included, I noticed this story late last night.
The Mayor Rocks !!!!!!
By not paying the bill & not reporting the lights, it’s not going to get corrected. The Township must oppose by the BPU any rate hikes that JCP&L ask for.
The truth hurts, so TLS wouldn’t post the Emmes.
I would like to thank all the volunteers.
I was very impressed to see Mayor Miller, Committeeman Coles, Committeeman Lichtenstien and Committeeman Ackerman come in to do rounds last night.
They didn’t just dictate-they were out there.
lets not forget over a dozen Chaveirim Vol. that spent hours out there
I was there, there was a spirit of cooperation and the general enthuseism of doing what you know is the right thing for the town. The organizers of this project spent many hours on making the maps (zones) easy to follow and user friendly.
I’m new to Lakewood and if this Mayor (Rabbi Miller) was in my home town he’d be a celebrity over night. This was an ingenious idea!
could we do the same with the tight streets send 2 guys down any street which has parking on both sides and see if the st could handle 4 cars side by side good luck with your mirrors!
Mayor Miller, Congratulations for a job well done.
#19, well guess what? Mayor Menashe Miller is a big celebrity in this town. We all love him and know that he really cares about all the citizens of this town. He is trully the best.
NOW LAKEWOOD NEEDS SIDEWALKS IN ALL OF LAKEWOOD – FOR THE SAFTY OF THE’RE RESIDENTS.
The headline says “burnt” and there is no word in the English language, at all, spelt “burnt.”
It must have taken quick because as it is there arent much street lights!
@ #24
from the dictionary:
burnt |bərnt|
adjective
variant spelling of burned .
To #24 there is also no word as “spelt” unless u mean spelt bread etc.
next we got to do potholes
It should also be noted that some lights are not burned out, but are power cycling going on and off, and thats harder to notice by just passing by as it maybe working then but the next minute its off, so i believe there is much more poles that need repair!

thats why on the streetlight form there is a place to either mark off “light off” or light flickering”. This way if its one of those that has the end of life on/off you check off the latter box. This way when JCP&L repairman comes by and sees the light on he knows that if he sticks around for another 5 min he’ll see it shut off.
