Election Day Message From BOE Candidate Shui (Joshua) Schmuckler

shui_schmuckler_tlsDear voter, A month or two ago when I chose to run for the BOE it was not an easy choice for me. I currently sit on the planning board for a number of years and  have sat on the budget committee a couple of years ago, and I wasn’t sure if I should get more involved. What pushed me to get involved is that I felt I can work with the current board in an exemplarity fashion and help them to continue lowering the budget. But there are a number of candidate that are offering a similar agenda, so why did I run? Well, the past year, even though the board did a fine job watching our tax dollars I felt that things could have been done better. I felt they were going from crisis to crisis and they needed someone on the board to help them work as a group instead of working as 9 individuals. I felt that this caused most of the constant tug of wars between the members.

I chose to put myself up for election for this reason. I feel I can help the board work together in the same fashion as I have done on the previous boards I sat on. More than that, I feel if the board will work as a group they can save even more tax payer money and get a better education for the children. This is the reason I chose to run with a member of the senior community, Larry (Lawrence) Avrin, and Tracey Tift, a parent of the public school and a head of the PTA.

I strongly feel working together with all components of Lakewood will allow us to reduce the budget an additional 10% while getting a much better education for the children.

At this point it has grown to be an election that not only will decide the makeup of the BOE for next year, but it will decide how the other parts of our government prioritize as well. This election has come down to a question over the change that has happened in Lakewood the past couple of years where taxes have stabilized, or a choice of going back 3-6 years where decisions were made based on a few individuals and not always in the tax payers best interest. This election is being watched by the Twp committee, Fire commissioners, and County elected officials. They are watching very closely and will use this election to decide if the Lakewood voters are serious about making government small, more efficient and lowering taxes. It is very easy for an elected official to say yes to everything knowing with the right backing he will be reelected anyway. This would mean going back to 10% a year tax increases. Cutting a budget is never easy, as every dollar spent went to somebody, and those somebody’s will fight very hard not to lose it. When a cut is made the person will always complain, not in my backyard rather cut somewhere else.

I will end off pledging that if I am elected, I will do everything in my power not to hurt a single child, as well as work as hard as I can to lower the budget by 5-10% for next year. This can be done as this current BOE has shown.

Thanks and I respectfully ask you to vote today between 2-9pm for Schmuckler, Avrin, and Tift.

  1. I voted for you,Avrin and Tift. I really hope you guys win. As far as the town watching this election closely,I don’t think that would be fair. It seems there was a very poor turnout, quite obviously because of people still being away from Pesach(Passover)….In truth that isn’t an excuse,I too just got back not long ago but made sure to cast my vote.
    Hope you guys win!
