Dorit Attias, a US Army SSG, (Staff Sergeant) and an employee at the Department of Public Works, will be leaving for Iraq today for a year-long deployment, TLS has learned. Besides for being a DPW employee, Attias, 47, is a renowned athlete who has won many medals in international competitions.
She is also a volunteer firefighter in Lakewood, and a former Lakewood Auxiliary Police member.
Attias has competed in table tennis, race walking and other competitions.
Competing for Israel, where she was born, she has taken first place in long-distance race walking at the New York City Marathon in 1988, the Los Angeles Marathon in 1996 and 1998, the Honolulu Marathon in 1997, and in the Walt Disney Marathon in Orlando, Florida in 2001.
She joined the US Army in 1998, when she was 35.
According to US law, employers of residents who report to duty, are required to keep their job open until they return.
During the last few weeks Dorrit tells TLS, she spent her days packing up her home and placing her items in large storage containers.
Today, Attias reported to the McGuire Air Force Base, where she will be departing along with her 77th Sustainment Brigade group. TLS.

Dorit,
Be safe, and don’t forget to duck.
Good luck – stay safe!
why does’t she get an escort and farewell party
Wishing you a safe trip to Iraq and back to Lakewood. I am really not sure why they cannot deploy you right here in town. It seems the local PD could use some help in dealing with gang members. Maybe it is an idea worth considering that all new police officers should have at least some combat experience, since this town seems at times to resemble a war zone.
Thanks #20. Couldn’t agree more.
THANKS TO ALL see you soon.
These stupid wars gotta end. Protecting our liberties???? Are they joking? WE’RE BANKRUPT!!!!!
We’re forcing democracy down the throat’s of 7th century throwbacks who don’t want it. Both of those countries together aren’t worth 1 dead US soldier.
