Letter: Allergic on Pesach

While most kids complain that there is nothing to eat on Pesach, I think it is fair to say that most people have plenty of food and cake to eat over Yom Tov.

However, anyone with an allergic child begins to dread the season. What foods can they make?

I have a sibling with a son that is allergic to dairy and eggs. That means no yogurt, cheese and lebens, and almost all baking recipes contain eggs. More so on Pesach.

Although he thankfully is not allergic to nuts, there are many amongst us that have nut allergies as well. That means that all those non-gebrokts nut recipes are out of the question for these kids.

I decided to reach out to the public and see if anyone has recipes to share for the allergic kids (and adults) for Pesach.

Please post your allergy friendly Pesach recipes in the comments below and label them which allergen they are free of (egg free or nut free etc).

I would also like to share an additional resource we were told about that is helpful. There is a blog called Between Carpools where they list a few good egg and nut free recipes for Pesach as well. (www.betweencarpools.com)

Hopefully we can join our resources together and help each other!

Have a wonderful plentiful Pesach!

  1. Thank you! Following…. I have a child with dairy, egg and not allergies. Non gebrochts too. Would love cake recipes. Perhaps a recommendation for an egg substitute in a regular cake recipe would do as well.

  2. Chia seed gel is a pretty good egg substitute. Grind 2 teaspoons of seeds, mix with 1/4 cup water. Let stand until gelled. This is about 1 eggs worth. For cake recipes you can use up to 2 of these. Any more and it won’t hold so well. You can skip the grinding step as chia seeds absorb a ton of water. It just stakes a little while. Soak the seeds in a half cup of water till the seeds are saturated and gooey.

  3. According to the OU, at oukosher.org (sorry I can’t paste the url straight to the kitniyus list), chia seeds are not kitniyus but may require special checking.

  4. Eggs can be substituted with 1/4 cup of unsweetened applesauce per egg. This means for recipes calling for 2 eggs, you’d need 1/2 cup of unsweetened applesauce. I tried it & the consistency of the cake was perfect.
