The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].
Question:
This location has been known for its accidents – mainly caused by left turn drivers going on yellow/red and straight drivers going on yellow/red. Wouldnt it be beneficial to have a RED turning arrow that either turns red after the period allotted for turning only or 5/10 seconds before the light turns yellow for ppl going straight in order for the left turning to already be finished when the light turns yellow/red to save for these numerous (weekly at least) accidents?
Response from Mayor Coles:
Good morning,
That is a very good idea. I’m embarrassed to say I had not thought of it before. I will ask our engineer to reach out to the county & see if this is something they can program in to this light as well as others around town.
Thanks
Ray

How about people follow the rules, you must stop on yellow unless you can’t, which means a car behind the line can’t turn on yellow at all, a guy going straight can’t speed up to get through yellow either unless he is too close to stop.
Great idea! If you don’t actually frequent that intersection. Why limit the already backed up turning lane even further? It’s often possible to make a left after the arrow has disappeared. Perhaps a better idea is to delay the side northbound side from turning red for an extra 2 seconds, that should help reduce accidents and keep the traffic flowing.
I bet that because of the driver’s complete disregard for the signals, everyone’s in a rush to get to the next red light. It won’t matter one bit. In NYC we would leave an old retiring cruiser nearby with its lights advertising. A couple of extra batteries in the trunk. Problem solved.
the sad part is, people not familiar with our roads and intersections, are calling the shots and not setting up our intersections to the most beneficial system that’s possible., there are several intersection that with a little tweak can be significantly enhanced. intelligent people that are always traveling these roads and have a keen sence to better things need to be called forward and give their good advice!
That’s a smart idea, but it’ll back up the turning lane.
If they go ahead with this, then they should at least have the Green turning light stay on a little longer to help with the traffic.
I would simply switch the turning arrow to the end of the cycle.
