On Tuesday, Governor Murphy ordered all US flags in New Jersey to be lowered to half staff on Wednesday in mourning over the loss of a cadet who tragically lost his life in an accident at West Point military academy in New York.
Chris Morgan, 22, of West Orange, NJ, was killed when a military vehicle he was riding in overturned in harsh terrain during summer training at West Point. 2 soldiers and 19 other cadets were also injured in the accident. Murphy was known as a beloved leader, kind person, and high-level athlete. He was expected to graduate from West Point next spring.
“I’ll always miss him. There’s no changing that. It’s tough – I’ll always love him and that will never go away,” said an emotional Chris Morgan Sr., the victim’s father.
President Trump tweeted his condolences to the family and friends of Chris hours after being briefed on the incident. “So sorry to hear about the terrible accident involving our GREAT West Point Cadets. We mourn the loss of life and pray for the injured. God Bless them ALL!,” tweeted Trump.
“Cadet Morgan represented the best of New Jersey and this nation,” said Governor Murphy. “Although he was taken from us too soon, we will never forget the legacy he left behind of courage and sacrifice. Tammy and I send our deepest condolences to the Morgan family and his loved ones during this difficult time.”
A GoFundMe set up in memory of Chris has already racked up over $60,000 in donations.
