A Lakewood man withdrew money from his bank account after receiving a threatening call from a party claiming to be the IRS, TLS has learned.

Sources told TLS the man allegedly received one of the apparent scam calls claiming to be from an IRS agent, threatening him with either incarceration or fines if he didn’t immediately send them money.

The frightened man went to the bank to withdraw money, but a family remember reportedly intervened before he could give over the money.

Just yesterday, the IRS once again warned people about this type of scam.

The IRS will never:

• Call to demand immediate payment using a specific payment method such as a prepaid debit card, gift card or wire transfer. Generally, the IRS will first mail a bill to any taxpayer who owes taxes.
• Threaten to immediately bring in local police or other law-enforcement groups to have the taxpayer arrested for not paying.
• Demand that taxes be paid without giving taxpayers the opportunity to question or appeal the amount owed.
• Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.
• Call about an unexpected refund.
