The funds for the trees came from Township and State grants, according to Lakewood Board of Education Attorney Inzelbuch.

  1. I wish they would spread the trees around town. There are many streets that can use tree replacement. Many of the old trees have been uprooted for development and were never replaced.

  2. Half the trees look like they are already dead.

Have you heard the latest chant the kids are singing? (TTO “if your happy and you know it”)
If you see a tree in lkwd, build a house.
If you see 2 trees in lkwd build a duplex
If you see 3 trees in lkwd, if you see 3 trees in lkwd build a complex!!!

  3. Just a Money dump from unused grant money. Anything they don’t use they lose. It’s not township money so can’t be used anywhere else. Easiest way to dump a lump of green.

  4. It is the wrong time of year to be planting trees. Newly planted trees need large quantities of water. Spring is the best time, plants are coming out of dormancy and there is often ample natural water. It takes 3 years for your typical tree to establish itself. It’s likely many of these won’t make it til Labor Day.

    • Trees can be planted anytime up till frost. There are a few exceptions. I have cypress fast growing trees all along my back yard. They can only be planted in spring to develop their shallow root system.

  5. Rip up the forest in some parts of town, plant a forest somewhere else to compensate… i don’t understand whats going on!
Wouldn’t planting trees all over town make more sense than planting all of them on a nice field?

  6. I always wondered why trees can’t be injected with growth hormones, everything else is! All these new developments don’t have a single tree. It’s unpleasant to take a stroll around these developments where there aren’t any trees to provide shade and absorb some of the heat.

  7. So if it’s use it or lose it. Why trees? How about security or enhancing curriculum or sports or arts or music or IT? And I don’t mean wood milling.

  8. I’ve seen many of the trees near the Clifton Ave school are dying as they are not being watered. Trees need a lot of water the first few years. You can’t just plant and leave

  9. On Lexington Avenue the trees are already dying. They were planted on some of the hottest days this summer.
They are not spaced correctly from each other, and some are too close to the sidewalk. Was anybody with any expertise involved in this?
Mean while the town ship almost never cuts the grass, and the parking lot is a dump for trash and and abandoned cars. And don’t even mention the terrible streets.
The whole area is like some slums in Newark.
    It is embarrassing!

  10. Lakewood has its own beauty, it’s the people of Lakewood. There is no where else where such people grow, that’s the most important.

    • Chacaham: What you write is true. BUT it is not an excuse for the township authorities to neglect the township streets and properties, which belong to the taxpayers!
