Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responds to your ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions: New Hampshire Ave

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Question:

Dear Mayor,

I travel every day on New Hampshire. I have a couple of requests in regard to the Route 88 and New Hampshire intersection. When traveling north and you need to turn west onto Route 88 during rush hour there can be a long line to make that left. I think in general the left turning is generally decently long however, there are time that it isn’t. When no one traveling south on New Hampshire is in the turning lane to turn east on Route 88 the left turn single is very short. In allows those traveling north to continue north and has a very short left turn signal, allowing maybe just 3-4 cars to go. I’m not sure the reason for this but if for a few lights in a row this happens the line to turn left can build up pretty quickly. Is there a way you can change this? The left turn signal should remain the same regardless whether someone is waiting in the other direction to make a left too.

Secondly, the development at the south west corners allows for left turns from New Hampshire. This always creates a very dangerous situation since it is so close to the Route 88 intersection many drivers think the left blinker is for then and then the car suddenly stops before. It also creates additional back up. It would be safer if no left turns would be allowed in.

I appreciate you taking this into consideration!

Response from Mayor Coles:

Hi Esther

I have already asked that the county lengthen the turn lanes & look into the light timing at both 88 & Cedarbridge. Technology today allows for many adjustments to light timing, so hopefully they will be able to tweak things and keep everyone moving better. I will also ask them to look at the left turn out of that development.

Thanks

Ray
