Sunday: Bikur Cholim of Lakewood to host Blood Drive

hhBikur Cholim, a nonprofit Lakewood medical assistance organization, is sponsoring a blood drive this Sunday, July 3rd.

The blood drive is for the Central Jersey Blood Center, which is the blood bank that supplies blood to all the Lakewood area hospitals.

Appointments are optional but appreciated. Donors should allot ½ -3/4 hour from the time they arrive to donate until they leave. To schedule an appointment, visit https://donate.cjbcblood.org/donor/schedules/drive_schedule/41695 or call 888-71-BLOOD (888-712-5663).‎

Donors must be healthy, at least 17 years old or be 16 with parental consent, weigh at least 120 pounds, and present a signature ID. Remember to eat and drink plenty of fluids before donating blood.

According to one of the coordinators of this drive, 0ver 100 people donated blood during two previous blood drives this year, which means more than 300 lives were saved.

“Even if you are not involved in saving lives day-to-day, this is a simple way to help save another person’s life,” said Bikur Cholim. “Donating blood is such an easy experience. You sit in a chair and a few minutes later you walk out, knowing you have saved three lives.”

The event will take place at their headquarters, 93 Prospect Street, Lakewood, from 10:00am to 3:00 p.m.

  1. Can the bikur cholim please let the tzibur know if collected blood is being used for specific people (dye lchkima’) in our community or to the general pool?
I have heard there is a question about a Chavala and the answer to the question above may be critical to obtain a appropriate psak whether one should donate.
Our tzibur is B’H one that lives halacah .
Thank you. I will be there if the answer is that the blood is for our community.

  2. For those not wanting to wait for the response the article clearly states : “supplies blood to all the Lakewood area hospitals.” indication is pretty clear. or try contacting CJBC by calling 1-888-71-BLOOD (1-888-712-5663) or email us at [email protected]. You can also visit our location and hours page to reach each of our donor centers
NOTE: With all ” feel good” issues always verify if they conform to halacah and dina dmalchusa!

  3. The blood being donated by this drive is not guaranteed to go to members of the frum community. This blood will enable the center to have blood to give to our community members too when they need.

  4. I know when I used to live in brooklyn and the bikur Cholim there was making the blood drive together with miamonadies health center, some poeple asked the head of bikur Cholim that question, and he answered that first of all there is a LG percentage yidden in the hospital, and second that of I he brings in a high volume of blood it gives him power when he needs it, which hopefully he shouldn’t need it.
So either way you have a part in helping saving lifes including yidden.

  5. When you are in a car crash and the trauma room needs to give you blood will you tell them “wait I only want from my community” or will you take whatever they give you because that’s your only chance of survival???? So give into the same pool that will maybe save your life!
And you can always ask your rov as far as chvala goes….

  6. The first comment clearly recommend asking a Rov once you have the facts. He furthermore, said he would donate his blood if his Rov said it was appropriate. Why anybody has trouble ascertaining what the halacah is beyond my comprehension.
Vchol mi shosek btzarchai tzibbur B’EMUNAH………

  7. Sometimes this forum is not the place to work these issues out. Perhaps a short reminder to ask a Rav is all that is necessary. Other people read this site as well as non-jews. A lot of misinformation tends to get passed around. To those not familiar with the context and fuller picture of such discussions it can come across as arcane or offensive.

  8. Agreed. Possibly bikur cholim should have a Rov and share his name and psak prior to soliciting donations. Or at least a note that each individual should speak to his /her morah horah. If one does not have one R”L it’s imperative that are mkyaim asah lecha Rav.
