“We are able to confirm that there is one fatality now that rescuers have been able to enter the dump truck,” New Jersey State Police said in regards to the earlier crash. “We will not have a name to release until the identity has been confirmed and next of kin has been notified.”
The crash that occurred around 10:30 AM today shut down the Turnpike in both directions.
Motorists got stranded for several hours in the traffic, prompting some to even get out of their vehicles and play ball on the state road.
The northbound lanes have since reopened, but the southbound lanes are expected to remain closed through this evening’s commute.
Arterial area roads are also seeing heavy delays due to the traffic diversion.
UPDATE 10:30 PM. The southbound lanes are now being opened. Motorists can expect heavy residual delays.
The state highway was shut for approximately 12 hours today, one of the longest closures of this road in recent history due to an accident.

Disaster! Stay away from the parkway!
Parkway is not the issue. It’s the turnpike you want to steer clear of
You must not have been on the Parkway if you’re saying that. My commute of an hour and fifteen minutes became four hours and ten minutes. The worst trip I can remember in years.
To anon i was on the parkway today and it took me 2.5 hours to go from 165 to 140 and it was because of turnpike overflow and accident
I was on the parkway too. The parkway was ok it was all the roads leading to it that were not
I got stuck on the turnpike right when the accident happened after 2 hrs they had some northbound traffic in car lanes make u turns drive the wrong way to cross over to truck lanes because that was opened. I sat another hr and half until that moved clear of the accident. I saw other cars were not able to cross over and had to just sit. So a 15 minutes stretch took hrs not sure the pkwy was so bad after all….
Congestion was awful caused delays for hours for many. The loss of life will impact peoples lives for ever though. That’s a permanent tragedy and all the congestion is pale by comparison. Let’s keep our priorities straight.
