Culvert to be Replaced on Miller Road in Lakewood to Reduce Flooding

county truck tlsOcean County is preparing to replace two aging culvert pipes located under Miller Road in Lakewood, in order to reduce flooding in the area.

“Following a review of the area, the Ocean County Engineering Department determined replacing the culvert will help decrease flooding problems in the area making it safer for motorists,” said Freeholder John P. Kelly, Director of Law and Public Safety.

The Ocean County Board of Chosen Freeholders is expected to authorize the engineer’s recommendation to seek bids on the project during its March 18 meeting.

“Replacing the existing culverts with a single 4 foot by 4 foot concrete box culvert will provide for a much needed improvement for this roadway,” said Kelly, who is liaison to the Ocean County Engineering Department.

The project also includes modifications to the geometry of the roadway to ensure that it meets current state and federal standards.

Sight distances and roadway banking will be improved for the added safety of the motoring public.

Construction is planned to start in late spring and be completed by the end of summer.

“Ocean County maintains more than 250 bridges and culverts,” said Freeholder Director John C. Bartlett Jr.

“These structures and spans are critical to our transportation network,” said Freeholder James F. Lacey, who serves as liaison to the Ocean County Road Department. “Our Engineering Department along with our Road Department and Bridge Division work closely together to insure our roads and infrastructure are well maintained and safe for everyone using them.”

  1. Will it really happen this time?
It has been “in the works”, just like the long-promised Miller Road sidewalks, for the past 8 years.

  2. We got sidewalks down one side of Miller… I suppose that’s a start. How will people living on side roads who rely on Miller rd to get to town get around? How bad will traffic be?

  3. This has been in the works for many years.
In fact, the reason why they didn’t finish doing the sidewalks in that area is because they were going to do it the same time they fix up that whole area.
Let’s hope the county finally finishes up the sidewalks there, as it was paid for by the township years ago, and it still remains very dificult to walk over there, as it still has temporary asphalt.
