Ready for tolls on the Garden State Parkway and New Jersey Turnpike to go up again? Well, ready or not, it’s happening on January 1st.
Tolls were last increased on the Parkway (27%) and Turnpike (36%) in September 2020, and now highway officials say they need even more money for “capital improvements” and other costs.
In 2022’s New Year present to New Jersey drivers, toll prices for EZ-Pass holder on the Parkway will increase from $1.90 to $1.96 – but cash tolls are automatically rounded up to nearest nickel, meaning if you’re paying cash, the toll will cost you $2.
On the Turnpike, tolls will also increase by 3% – far less than the 2020 toll hike, but still painful for motorists who already pay some of the highest tolls in the country.
The main drivers for the toll increases, according to the Turnpike Authority, are:
- Increases in insurance premiums for cyber insurance
- EZ-Pass cost increases
- Salary increases and pension obligations for State Police (the Turnpike Authority pays for Troop D, which patrols the highways)
- Spending on road and bridge maintenance
- Purchasing new equipment and technology
Happy driving!
Somehow the tolls keep going up yet the roads keep getting worse.
I would like to thank all those who voted for Governor Murphey. We love paying more for stuff.
What happened to the trillions in Biden’s infrastructure bill?
Isn’t the working class paying enough already?!?
What happened to all that federal infrastructure money? Oh, that’s for Biden’s green energy friends to squander
How fortunate are we to have such a governor!
A bunch of ganovim!
Carpooling when possible & working from home when possible may ameliorate the situation.
