TRAGEDY: Benny Weisz Z”L of Lakewood Confirmed as Victim in Surfside Condo Collapse; Wife Not Yet Identified

A local frum man has been identified as a victim in the Surfside condo building collapse.

Benny Weisz Z”L, and his wife Malky, arrived in Surfside the night of the building collapse, on a visit to Malky’s father, Chaim Rosenberg, who had recently moved into the building at 8777 Collins Avenue. Malky’s father has also been confirmed as one of the victims.

Benny and Malky, who were married for 5 years without children, were cherished members of the Coventry Square neighborhood. Benny worked in finance and learned in Kollel, and Malky worked as an auditor at the Roth & Co. accounting firm.

Malky Weisz has yet to be identified as one of the victims.

Friends have described Benny, originally from Vienna, as an intelligent, refined man who had a wide range of interests and broad knowledge.

“Benny knows everything,” a childhood classmate and lifelong friend said. “He can quote the works of the great German playwrights and poets like Goethe and Schiller and explain the most complex debates in Gemara with meforshim.”

The niftar will reportedly be flown to Eretz Yisroel for kevurah.

The body of Chaim Rosenberg, Malky’s father, has also been recovered.

Chaim had purchased a condo on the second floor of the doomed building just a month prior to the collapse. He moved to Surfside after an awful year during which his wife passed away and lost both of his parents to Covid-19.

Chaim had in recent months been dedicating himself towards launching Merkaz Shalom, a young adult center for mental healing, located on the campus of Ma’ayanei Hayeshua hospital in Bnei Brak, in memory of his late wife.

He had returned from a trip to New York just hours before the building collapse to greet Benny and Malky as they arrived to visit him.

Chaim Z”L is being buried today in New York.
