The Inspection Department is continuing its timed parking enforcement in the Downtown Lakewood area by chalking tires.
Township Inspection Department Director Mike Saccamano tells TLS the Department is cracking down in response to numerous complaints from Downtown store-owners.
Inspectors use chalk to mark the tires, and then return to see if the vehicle has moved.
The Downtown area is defined as the area between Route 9 and Lexington Avenue, and between 5th Street and Main Street. The areas being monitored, says Saccamano, are the Municipal parking lots and area marked with timed parking – such as two or three-hour parking limits.
The Department us currently issuing warnings for first-time offenders, and a $20 parking fine for repeat offenders.
There is no court appearance required for the fine.
its unconstitutional just google it
A judge in Ohio ruled that its illegal someone should Sue Lakewood police department.
Its not the Lakewood Police Department doing it. It is the Inspection Department, they are in charge of parking & overcrowding.
hmm they’ve done an outstanding job on overcrowding!
keep it up rules are meant to be followed.
@jack
A judge in New Jersey!
As mentioned above it was ruled unconstitutional by a appeals court in Michigan and something that would require a warrant
What about on sundays when strand theatre is open all the attendees go way over the 2 hour limit in the bagel nosh parking lot
6th circuit court has ruled it unconstitutional
Alison Taylor v. City of Saginaw
It may be unconstitutional, but per state law, if someone is issued a parking ticket — which can be quite steep in cost — and it goes unpaid your driver’s license and car registration will be immediately revoked the moment it goes unpaid after the court date. Should that happen and you are pulled over, the police officer must, by law, take you to the police station and tow your car away. It happened to me once. The officer was nice and drove me back to my home instead of the police station — but my car was towed and it cost a few hundred dollars to have my car released from the impound parking lot.
Just don’t violate the parking regulations and you wouldn’t have to deal with this.
they use to do that in LAKEWOOD IN THE 80″S AND EARLY 90’s. IF IT STATED 2 HOUR PARKING THEN THAT WHAT IT MEANS. THERE ARE RULES AND ORDINANCES FOLLOW THEM. IT SAID THE INSPECTIONS DEPT WAS MARKING THE CARS, NOT THE POLICE DEPT
It might be illegal and unconstitutional but think about all the business owners in the area who lose out on costumers who can’t find parking because a few offices are too cheap to pay for an employee parking lot. Those lots were built to build retail businesses in the Clifton ave area, not to destroy them.
It’s a shame that theres not enough parking for everyone.
Tell that to the Planning Board they are the ones that allowed it.
What if u park and leave within 2 hr limit and come back to park again? Doesn’t sound foolproof. They can’t ticket such things. Besides that it’s ruled as on constitutional.
The chalk mark will be in a different place.
The 6th Circuit ruling only covers the 6th circuit states – Not NJ…
If you registration is not registered the officer is “authorized” to tow your car.. not required. Read the laws! Apparently the officers in Lakewood think it’s a requirement…
People should be more considerate. By parking there long term, stops people from getting spots.
I work on Clifton Ave
All the women in our office are afraid to use the municipal lots they are jeered at by the people standing around and panhandled by crazies from the Lexington Ave home.
If they don’t park on Clifton the spots are taken by people who live in the apartments above the shops and by cars with out of state plates
Clean up the lots and the area around Clifton Ave and people will feel safe to park in the lots
Maybe this won’t be posted, but the police department has no such ordinance on the records, and the inspection department has no jurisdiction on parking .. so this is all nonsense and the real issue is cleaning up Clifton Ave …. not letting the shop owners beat up legitimate business owners while doing nothing to solve the real issues on Clifton Ave
And to the commenter earlier… where exactly should businesses owners set up parking lots for employees in the Clinton Ave area??
Just don’t break the law if you do there are penalties end of story…
