UPDATE: Petition to have Verizon keep 3G towers in Lakewood gains traction

The following is an update from the resident who started the Verizon petition: Since this petition went live a mere 36 hours ago,

it has really gotten much attention, and has amassed more than 300 signatures. For a petition that pertains to just one single community to get so many votes in such a short time is inspiring, and hopefully it will make an impression on Verizon.

News of this petition was initially posted on The Lakewood Scoop, and it was later picked up by various news outlets. An article about this petition also appeared last night on NJ1015.com, but it misconstrued some basic details of the petition. To their credit, NJ1015.com quickly amended the piece when contacted, but even their final version of the story implies intentions that were far from ours.

In order to avoid future confusion, I would like to stress a few points.

1-      The petition does not in any way oppose the advent of modern technology. The call for Verizon to upkeep their 3G towers is not a contradiction to their maintenance of 4G towers, or the development of a 5G network.

2-      Nowhere in the petition is religion being touted as the basis for the request, and no religious exemption was asked for. The details about Orthodox Jews were only written to explain why there are more people in Lakewood, NJ that rely on the 3G network. The basis for the request is the virtue that we are Verizon customers, and by default, request of Verizon to help us.

3-      The intention of the petition was not to ask Verizon to upkeep the 3G towers in Lakewood indefinitely. This would obviously not be feasible for Verizon, and would also cause 3G device users to lose all service the minute they drive out of Lakewood. The request was that Verizon maintain the local 3G towers “as long as it is feasible to do so”. The intention was hopefully until the end of 2019, but at least until the end of this year. This will allow current 3G users to gradually purchase 4G devices as their phones break, and not have to buy new phones now just because the Verizon tower is broken.

I hope this cleared up any confusion.

I will post another update when I hear anything concrete from Verizon on the matter. Thank you all for your support.

  1. the problem with this petion is that there are many people in this communtiy that do have smart phones. They are seen in public with them and then you go and post this on 101.5. If you go to the comments about article they are not good. Its one thing if you want to make a change and contact Verizon directly but to make a big scene about this only makes more problems for the yidden.

  2. This post claims that Verizon supporting 3g doesn’t get in the way of them expanding 4g and 5g. Actually, it does. Verizon plans on using their current 3g spectrum, 800 and 1900 MHz, for 5g. If they were to leave 3g in Lakewood, Lakewood and the surrounding towns wouldn’t be able to get 5g.
Plus, it’s not realistic to think that Verizon will keep Maintenance crews trained in the old 3g tech, and equipment needed to support the infrastructure.

  3. People should start making petitions against 5G.. Its a totally new type of technology. nothing like 3G or 4G. it will cause serious health problems.. Research 5G… Say no to 5G…
