As first reported by TLS, all of Lakewood public elementary schools will soon be getting metal detectors.
In addition, after discussion with the Lakewood Police Department, the School District will also require students to have clear backpacks. The announcement was made during TheLakewoodScoop.com live stream yesterday evening.
Attorney Inzelbuch announced that Lakewood is the first district in Ocean County that will have metal detectors and wands at all of its elementary schools, and that other districts are planning on following.
During the meeting, John Stillwell, who heads the security in the District, gave a presentation of how the wands work, and when they will be used.
The security additions come after the a 4th grader brought a loaded gun to school. Another student also handled the gun, video surveillance showed.
With regards to the students involved in the students involved in the incident, Inzelbuch said details cannot be discussed because of juvenile privacy laws, but that Board’s policy is that if anyone brings a weapon to school, they will have a superintendent’s disciplinary hearing, and will face expulsion from school.
What prevents someone from.wrapping his gun in a sweater or bag etc. How does this help?
Silliest thing I’ve ever heard of. One kid brings a gun to school and now everyone has to have a clear backpack. Insane. It’s like requiring all bags in the town to be clear bec. Someone was caught with a gun downtown. Would actually be a nice law in Israel.
Funny everyone has to suffer cus someone bring a gun to shcool and now all of our 2nd Amendment rights are being taken away and nobody bats and I put students have to use clear backpacks and everybody loses their (moderated) hmmm Hypocrite much
I guess if someone puts a gun in his pocket they’ll need clear pockets too… Maybe school parents should have a class about gun safety so the kids won’t be able to snatch them….
Not a whole lot of forward thinking went into this decision.
Most ridiculous…
Clear backpacks are not the solution!
Will the school provide the backpack? At who’s expense?
Did you read the article part about metal detectors? Sure, one person creates a dangerous situation and everybody is inconvenienced. Welcome to law and order. Clear pockets? Genius deduction (sarc). The latest news is NJ lawmakerd are way out of sync with the 2A already. Want to make it harder. If that gun was legal, which I doubt, the owner loses his license. If not the poor kid goes with DYFS. Sad.
oy, meh haya lonu. the whole culture of this country–actually, of this world–has changed.
Do the private school children require clear backpacks too? If so nonpublic security aid should be used to purchase them and the district should pay for public school students’ clear backpacks.
clear backpacks??? is that a joke? they cant keep the gun in a coat pocket? lunch bag etc.
