The Planning Board moments ago passed the Master Plan, with some contingencies. The new plan calls for some road widening of some of Lakewood’s major roads, including Route 9, Prospect Street, Cross Street, Pine Street and more.
The plan also called for more sidewalks, more open space and more turning lanes.
With the town growing at a quick pace, and thousands continue to move in, the goal of the Master Plan is to set the tone for smarter planning for housing and development throughout the Township. This Plan is set to be in place for the next 10 years.

The Planning Board help multiple meetings to allow for residents to speak their opinions about the Master Plan.
The Plan, say officials, will allow the thousands of more homes to be built around the town, but calls for more aesthetically-pleasing developments, impact fees for developers, wider roads within developments – to allow for parking on both sides, larger setbacks and other items to ensure the growth is done in a smarter way.
All voted yes, except for Memberr Louis Follman who voted no.

Gotta say i watched parts of the meeting, and from what I saw it appeared like a civil discussion. Amazing how much more you can accomplish without the immature yelling matches. Just stay focused on what’s at task and you’ll get places. Thank you all.

Though Lakewood is unique in its challenges, the growth and building challenges are not unique to Lakewood. Every large city went through these type of growing pains as they transformed from a small little town to a city. The difference is, you are seeing it before your eyes.
Why? This township is so overly stuffed we don’t need more homes wider streets will just make more safety concern although it’s needed even without the extra traffic on them.
Do you want to ban people from building on open space? If they conform to the law, you can’t deny them a place to live. And no, I’m not a builder, and am not an investor.
True, but there’s no reason you need to zone the land for duplexes or even triplexes.
I agree with you, the infrastructure in town will break down, There is no way it can handle the 1000’s of more units. Even with the master plan in place I will bet you that developers will come in with changes that will be approved. When I sat on the planning board in another town we made sure the developers made contributions to the town in the areas they impacted.We even mad one pay for an addition to a public school

I just want to take a moment to thank the Scoop for reporting the real news, and not the fake ‘facts’ and complaining out there. I’ve been reading your site since you opened about 10 years ago, and being secular and seeing the garbage out there, it’s refreshing to see a beautiful community news site, clean and family-friendly, and up to date with all that’s important in our town.

About the master plan, did anyone even read through that thing? It’s the size of a phone book.
Though I’m not a fan of all this crazy development, I have to say I’m really happy the township got this done, and didn’t listen to the couple bitter haters such as (moderated). The silent majority of this town appreciates those who speak and act civil. Had the majority really been bothered, you’d see thousands show up and protest as has been done in the past. An empty coin box makes more noise than a full one….so township guys keep up your good work and keep standing up for what’s right.

Contingencies of widening roads?
will the planning board actually wait until the roads are widened before issuing approvals? or will they first issue approval and use the “future” road widening as an excuse for why they gave the approval?

Is great they made contingencies to the matter plan. However I can assure you that will be on a back burner or even shelved! I think they should put in place a total freeze untill these few conditiona have been met to widen rt 9, pine,and prospect before even one more house can be built. You will see how fast those streets will be widened!
