Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responds to your ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions: Traffic questions and ideas

The following are ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s responses. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Question:

Hi Mr Mayor.

Is there any way they can make a left turning lane on Spruce Street where it hits Rt 9? Many times a car making a left on the 9 sits all the way to the right side of Spruce St thereby not allowing anyone to make a right turn or go straight and backing up Spruce St bigly.

Looking forward to your reply.

Thank you.

Response from Mayor Coles:

Hi Dovid

There are multiple intersections along Rt 9 that need to be upgraded in addition to this one. I know how frustrating it is to get stuck behind someone who didn’t pull over enough to let you by. I am attending a meeting at the state DOT on August 16 to discuss the various improvements we need for Rt 9. In addition to our ever present request to widen the entire length of it, we have been promised that the state will begin making some turning lanes and intersection improvements within the next year.

Question:

Dear Mayor

Is there any plan for a traffic light or an all way stop sign for intersection Finchley & Rt 9 (it’s the only cross intersection from Pine until Cross on Rt 9 that does not lead into a dead end)

Response from Mayor Coles:

Hi Joseph

I hope you don’t mind me repeating an answer I just gave, but it is only a short distance away from Finchley & I am lousy typist.

Question:

Hi Mr. Mayor

Oak street between New Hampshire and Albert avenue is in dire need of repair. The ripped up road causes cars to swerve around potholes causing a real safety concern for walkers as there is no sidewalk in this area (and the shoulder lines are no longer visible). This really needs to be fixed before someone gets hurt.

Thank you

Response from Mayor Coles:

Good afternoon

I had Public Works inspect the street. It is indeed in need of milling & repaving. I have asked the manager to put this on our street repaving list for next year.

Question:

Hello Hon. Mayor!

I have a suggestion to improve the traffic flow on the corner of Hope Chapel Road and County Line. While the turning light to make a left from County onto Hope is green there should be a simultaneous turning light on Hope (northbound) to make a right onto County. This would relieve some of the long line of vehicles on Hope waiting to make a right turn.

Thanks for all you do & keep up the great work!

Joe

Response from Mayor Coles:

Hello Joe

I think this is a great idea. I will forward it to our engineering office as well as Maser, who was doing our traffic study & is currently working with the county to come up with as traffic plan for Lakewood as well.

Thanks

Ray

Question:

Dear Ray,

1. Attaya Rd is very dark long road. We have only three street lamps. I made a request to JCPL a couple of years ago and nothing was done. Can you please make the request?

2. We would also love if you can arrange for sidewalks so our children can be safe.

Thanks so much.

Response from Mayor Coles:

Hi Josh

I have asked Committeeman Lichtenstein (our committee liaison on street lighting) to reach out to JCP&L about getting some lights on Attaya. We will also look into adding the street to our sidewalk plan in next year’s budget.

Thanks

Ray

  1. Mayor Coles,
Can you please include Adams Street between Miller and Van Buren? The street is badly beaten up. It can use some curbs and sidewalks as well.Plus it has a lot of water after rain storms, seems like a river at times.
    thank you.

  2. Thanks! Joe’s suggestion would be great for the intersection of RT 88 and Clifton: when 88 has a left turning signal onto Clifton southbound, Clifton northbound should have a right turning light onto 88. Would help that backup tremendously!
