Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responds to your ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions: Parking spots too close to intersections

Question:

Hi,

Is there minimum distance a parking spot must be from the intersection? When trying to enter MLK Drive from Lincoln St, the car parked on MLK, closest to Lincoln St, obstructs the view of traffic coming from Pine St. One has to inch out into the the middle of MLK to see oncoming traffic from Pine St, which is extremely unsafe. I am sure that this intersection isn’t the only one that has the problem, however what can be done to fix this? Please note that the spot is in front of a house which most likely complicates eliminating it.

Good afternoon

Yes, there are laws which govern how far away from an intersection parking is allowed. The curbs should be painted 50 feet from a stop sign and 25 feet from the crosswalk or where the crosswalk would be if it was not painted. Those are state laws, and of course 10 feet from a fire hydrant.

We actually have a crew out painting the curbs around town. I will ask our public works director to have them take care of your neighborhood as soon as possible.

  1. What about the issue of parking on blocks that curve?
    One example that comes to mind is Daniel drive( off of Marc) when trying to drive that curve with cars parked on either side there’s no way to see oncoming cars and no way to have two cars drive by!
    I know this is an issue on many blocks.
    Is there a way to cut out some of the parking there to ensure better driving conditions?

  2. Thanks.if you can please paint the corner of ridge and somerset. Very hard to Make left turn or to go straight ,cars are parked till the corner i think there was a recocomndation on the traffic study to put a 4 way stop sign

  3. How about the corner of Hope Chapel and 14th Street? This is a terribly dangerous corner and there should be NO PARKING on 14th Street on that block!

  5. The same situation when coming down Lois lane towards Martin luther. It’s impossible to see when there’s a car parked on Martin Luther right by lois. Was hoping something can be done there too cuz it’s dangerous.

  7. How about making Martin Luther King Dr one way from pine to Wynatt st so that people can not turn onto Pine st from MLK. The three way stop there is useless as well, but if nobody is allowed to turn onto Pine from MLK, then the stop signs can be eliminated and Pine St can be like it used to be.

  8. Also people park on central av, When it clearly states no parking.can u please enforce this.people who live on central and are trying to pull out of thier driveway ,it makes it extremely dangerous to pull out because the parked cars are blocking the view of traffic.
