A Lakewood resident received severe burns after pouring water on a burning pan of oil, officials say.
The resident reportedly found the Latke pan in flames and quickly doused it with water, causing it to splash back at him.
The man was hospitalized with 2nd degree burns to his hands and face, an official said.
Pouring water on burning oil is extremely dangerous, and can instantly cause a fireball (see video of reaction here).
Burning oil should be doused with a fire extinguisher.

If you don’t have a fire extinguisher handy, pan fires can also be put out by pouring A LOT of baking soda in the pan. And covering the pan to deny oxygen to the flames.
Or turn off the flame and stand back it will burn it self out
You can also pour the contents of a bag of flour onto a pan fire to put it out.
EVERY house needs to have fire extinguishers. Kitchen extinguisher must be specific for kitchen fires.I move my extinguisher to my living room door for Chanukah. But don’t be a hero , get everyone out safely first.
Some fire extinguishers have water to stop a fire, DO NOT USE,
oil, grease, fires, etc, must be SMOTHERED:
flour, baking soda, sand, salt (large quantity) or SPECIFIC EXTINGUISHER for oil, grease fires should be used:
If Chas VeSholom you try to put out with water, the grease fire can EXPLODE
I sure hope the person has a full recovery.
