[VIDEO BELOW] As earlier reported on our news alerts, a driver slammed into a tree on a residential lawn following a police chase early this morning in Lakewood.  

At approximately 12:30 AM, police attempted to stop the vehicle driven by a suspected drunk driver, but the driver failed to pull over, officials say.

The officer continued pursuing the vehicle for about five minutes at slow speeds, but then broke off when the driver took off at a high rate of speed, officials told TLS.

About two blocks after police broke off the chase, the driver slammed into a tree on a lawn on New Hampshire Avenue, just south of Oak Street.

Emergency responders extricated the driver from the vehicle by cutting open the roof.

The driver – miraculously still alert – was airlifted to the hospital.

New Hampshire Avenue was partially shut for the investigation.
