Lakewood Varsity Coach suddenly Resigns after nearly 20 years

imageThe longtime coach of the Lakewood Varsity team at the Lakewood High School suddenly resigned yesterday, staff members and parents tell TLS.

Randy Holmes served as the coach for about 17 years, and shocked the parents and staff members when he announced it last night – but offered no explanation.

“All good things must come to an end!” He wrote. “This afternoon I ultimately made the toughest decision that I ever had to make. I handed my letter of resignation in as the Boy’s varsity Basketball Coach. I’m very sad that it had to come to this but, all good things most come to an end. I personally would like to thank every single player that I ever coached here at Lakewood.Thank you for trusting in me and allowing me to be an influence in your lives. Also, my parents who continue to support Lakewood Basketball and allowed me to instill discipline, structure and teach life lessons to your prize possessions. Also my coaching staff, we are family before anything else, thats the formula to success in our program! Last but not least, MM, DR, MF the best administrators anyone could ask for. Thank you for your unconditional support! I appreciate all of you.”

“He was well liked by everyone,” a staff member wrote to TLS.”

A parent in the school also had nothing but praise for the coach.

“Randy I can’t say that I’m surprised that you are leaving because I know the battles that you have endured. You have handled it gracefully and persevered being the winner that you are. You have put more work in off the court than most coaches put on the court. Your love for Lakewood cannot be questioned and your legacy lives on. I was proud to be boss but prouder to have my son play for you. Thanks.”

And another had this to say:

“Randy. You are and always will be a class act. The youth of Lakewood was blessed to have you as there coach!! The respect you’ve always gave to both of my boys. I can’t thank you enough. Other coaches shake there hand before games!! You always gave them a hug. Love you man!!! When one door closes another opens!! Best of luck to you and your family. Big things ahead for you.”

  1. Maybe he was tired of being in the public school system in Lakewood.
Its a thankless position, or maybe he knew he was going to lose his job with the new found “austerity” with the township BOE.

I cant imagine Lakewood Public school varsity athletic events are very well attended.

Hope he goes where his efforts are appreciated and applauded with fans in the seats.
