VIDEO: It’s simple – wear a helmet and get a free ice cream! TLS recognized the need for increased awarness and safety in
regards to helmet-wearing in Lakewood, so we decided to do something about it. But since summonses can’t be issued, we figured ice cream would do the trick.
Hence, ‘Click-it and Lick it’ was born – founded and sponsored by TLS.
In the coming days, patrol officers from the Lakewood Police Department will be given a bundle of gift cards like the one pictured above, and if they observe your child with a helmet, he or she will be receiving the card for a free kiddie ice cream at Sprinkles. It’s that simple!
In addition to the positive reinforcement aspect of the program, TLS and Lakewood Police Chief Rob Lawson felt that the program will also increase the comfort level of children when approaching police officers to report a crime, suspicous behavior, or g-d forbid if the child is lost.
So get those helmets out, and you’ll be on your way to the ice cream store!
IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR PARENTS: This program is specifically being done in conjunction with the Lakewood Police Department for security and safety reasons. Cards will ONLY be given out by a patrol officer in a MARKED police car – no private citizens whatsoever will be giving out these cards. Children should be told never to approach a stranger’s vehicle – even if he or she claims to be from the Law Enforcement community. If you see someone attempting to give a child the ice cream card, or any other items, please report it to the LPD immediately.

good job!!! ty LPD for being so cooperative about this
Genius!!!!!!! I wish I was a kid again!
Why is this genius? There are no police in my area so there is no incentive for my kids to wear their helmets (other than losing their bikes.). This only helps kids in the Clifton area.
great job TLC & LPD
keep it up
Ooooooooooooo!!!!!!!
terrible idea!!
kids must wear helmets but why let them gonear a car to get goodies
What ice cream shop can the cards be redeemed at?
I agree #3, no police come by here on a day – to – day basis, perhaps in a blue moon, usually on Shabbos! This incentive wouldn’t work here at all!
I think its dumb to offer kids things out of cars. It’s hard for a small child to defrenciate between a cop car and regular. Asking for disaster
Hatzolah and Askanim used to do something similar for those wearing reflectors. Thank you TLS for what you are doing!!!!!!
there’s a ticket for not wearing a helmet. 39:4-10.1
adult driving bike with helmet gets what ?
motorcycle driving with helmet gets what ?
driving scooter with helmet gets what?
Lakewood swat team driving with helmet gets what?
contstruction worker wearing helmet gets what?
utility worker wearing helmet gets what?
has mat team wearing helmet gets what?
Rewarding with more sugar and junk food
They should give free chulent and yaptzic at kosher taco to those adults wearing reflectors
Great concept, bad idea
That is the sweetest thing!!
Wonderful idea!! Thank you to lpd and the scoop!!
Maybe they can send some patrol cars to some of the developments down route 9. The kids there could definitely use some incentives to get them to wear helmets.
True there may not be police in all areas. But now not only is this an incentive to get kids to ware helmets its an incentive for the cops to patrol more areas.
No cops in Westgate….ever. they should give rewards to parents who don’t park I’m front of a ” no parking” sign. What do you think?
clearly a move woth very good intentions
oh c’mon give credit where credit is do.
Giving out ice cream as an incentive to wear bike helmets. OK. How about giving out TICKETS (or confiscating the bike) of those NOT wearing helmets. That would be more of an incentive to wear helmets. And it’s the law.
Replyto #6:
GREAT IDEA! Listen to the Intro from the Chief. He states: Lakewood Police Officers in CLEARLY MARKED cars, wearing FULL POLICE UNIFORM will be handing out …. This is a great oppertunity for children to understand that the Police are here to Serve and Protect.
If all children hear about Police is what parents tell them: “Watch out! There’s a Police” “he’s gonna give you a ticket”, “Hes gonna put you in jail”, etc. why would a child call the “Bad Guys” when he is in danger and/or needs help? Rather deal with one bad guy then a bunch of them, right?….
lousy analogy. Police Officers are the good guys not the bad guys. they serve and protect!!!
my kids cant wait. they are so exited to wear helmets!!!! great work!
#7 you can reedeem them at Sprinkles
yes i am on my way to walmart to buy my helmet
#23 cmon have a positive attitude be happy. FREE ICE CREAM!!!!!!
#11 you sound like you are quoting a mishlei or something. you have too much time on your hands if you know the law number. get out and do something!
I find it hard to believe that parents can’t train their children to wear helmets. All it takes is a little effort.
We had a rule in our family: Ride your bike without your helmet and you lose your bike. One of the kids “forgot” his helmet. We took his bike away for a day and he got the message that we meant business and never rode without a helmet again and neither did his siblings.
Btw, the helmets prevented a few injuries so the effort was worth it.
