PHOTOS: Bikur Cholim Volunteer Nearly Killed While Making Delivery

PHOTOS: “As we begin gaining back our bearings, post-storm, we are amazed at the events which played out”, Bikur Cholim tells TLS. One particular miracle, occurred on Monday afternoon at about 4PM when a Bikur Cholim volunteer was delivering food and a generator.

While driving, a large  tree came crashing down on the truck, breaking the windshield and falling on the empty passenger seat. The driver was miraculously completely unharmed, but the vehicle was rendered useless.

Since Motzei Shabbos prior to Hurricane Sandy, Bikur Cholim volunteers had been working around the clock in preparation of the storm. Hot fleishige meals were prepared, along with other food to overstock the 15 pantries located in the four area hospitals and Bikur Cholim house in anticipation of the hurricane.

They continued working throughout the storm, hooking up many generators for the elderly and medically challenged, especially those on life support systems, and readying all medical supplies. At times licensed electricians had to be called for assistance.

“The volunteers were constantly busy during the storm and post-storm including delivering food to the home-bound, setting up generators and refueling them or picking up from those whose power came back, and taking them to others in need”, says a Bikur Cholim coordinator.

The coordinator adds, “many Kimpturins were in danger due to the cold weather and lack of electricity, many of them were provided with generators, and others were taken in to the Bikur Cholim house.”

“Throughout the trying times, Bikur Cholim worked hand-in-hand with Chai Lifeline, Hatzalah, Chaveirim, LCSW and local government officials to enable the large amount of people to be serviced”, the coordinator said.

“Bikur Cholim would like to thank all those who gave of their time to volunteer around the clock. Special mention goes to the Misaskim volunteers who availed themselves to help and went above-and-beyond.” TLS.

  1. Bikur cholim you are the best! I would never have gotten through the storm without them! I had a newborn baby and no electricity. Bikur Cholim gave me a generator and kept on refilling it. The chesed you do is unbelievable! Nuti and Yisroel Aryeh- keep it up!!

  2. I was for Shabbos in Monmouth, they had limited back up power, I was shocked to see how Bikur Cholim stocked with Shabbos food in Ice boxes!!!! There was no fridge… Unbelievable. Btw it was interesting to see how all the ppl in the hospital using Bikur Cholim Shabbos battery operated candles for light!!! You guys are amazing

  3. Bikur cholim is amazing organization. From yehuda kasirer at the head, to coordinators’ shmiel, nuti, ari, shloimy, fm, 11, to the selfless indefatigable volunteers that work around the clock especially during this storm.

All hospital pantries were overstocked in the beginning of the week, generators tested and filled, transport vehicles filled with gas, mobile trailer fully functional, radios charged, all in preparation for the storm.

Very inspiring to watch you guys in action!
Yasher koach for all your hard work!

  4. May son needs a suction every few hour and its not the first time I had one their generators at my house (one time it had to be brought on shabbos by a non-jew) what amazed me this time how in middle of the storm 11pm as my gas was running low I placed a call to them if they had an idea how I was going to get gas at this hour? they said “we’ll be right out’ 10 min later I had a 5gallon jug at my door. No words can describe the feeling.. They saved my kids life!

  5. Does bikur cholim need need a new van ? If so I have a 15 year old conversion van garaged in excellent condition (61,000 mi.) in which I will be glad to donate to bikur cholim free of charge! I Baruch HaShem only have 2 bachurim left and I don’t need such a large vehicle any more. For a family person it’s a very large vehicle and a pain to drive around town, but it is about the same size as the bikur cholim sprinter and it may serve their needs. Cell # 732-580-7450

  7. As volunteer of the org.I have seen dozens of volunteers working 24 hours a day selflessly to help Klal Yisroel. There has not been a quiet moment the last 7 days delivering generators food etc. to the cholim of lakewood.Refilling there gas at all times a day and night. It is true kiddush hashem to see such indaviduals working tirelessly in rain wind day and night to help out. This was all besides the regular day to day operations of stocking hospital pantries giving out medical equipment transportation etc.

  8. I’m truly amazed by the unbelievable selfless chesed bikur cholim has been doing in our community. Having said that, I would like to suggest that the volunteers should have a reflector vest at night. It was at around 3:30 am when i woke up and heard next door people in the backyard, I was really scared, my neighbor who’s ill had a generator and I thought people were there to steal it. Dont forget it was pitched dark and I have heard how things like this do happen… Then I noticed it was bikur cholim volunteers refueling the generator (unbelievable at 3:30am…)

  9. Watching these selfless volunteers bochurim and married working or learning giving up from their own busy, as it is, lives to help others is amazing. Mi keamcha yisroel is all I can say. Watching them delivering and refilling at all hours of the day and night was an unbelievable sight to see. שכרם הרבה מאד.
