Hundreds Of Food Stamp Recipients In Lakewood Left Without Vouchers Due To Office Error

Food Stamp benefits for as many as hundreds of Lakewood families have expired due to the local offices not sending out proper notices on time, TLS has learned.Sources say the lack of proper staffing at the local Social Services offices have caused delays in processing the bi-annual re-certification letters for the recipients, which in turn caused the certification to expire.

Attempts by TLS to reach the Social Services offices for comment, were unsuccessful.

However, a family member of a recipient tells TLS, the Food Stamps office claims that the letters “are in the mail and will arrive within next two weeks.”

  1. “Attempts by TLS to reach the Social Services offices for comment, were unsuccessful”

Any attempt to reach them by anyone is unsuccessful. Sorry TLS, you will have to wait on line on 4th street just like everyone else. And enjoy waiting for 4 hours!!

  2. everything is slow as molasis. Senator Singer should be able to help. This is a state run federally finded program. Call and write his office to complain. He was put in offfice to help with stuff like this. Be nice to his secratary, she really wants to help.

  3. i understand people need help but what happened to having a job to help supplement your income and not just relying on all these programs to get you by.

  4. Even people with jobs can’t cover their daily expenses and need help to buy food, in fact you can’t get food stamps without a job or at least looking for a job! If u are that smart maybe u could find jobs for the thousands on unemployment still looking for any job

  5. when i used to be on the programs i learnt that the only way to get things moving is by calling the higher up. try contacting the governors office or an assemblyman

  6. Its simple: if i can get 50k in gov programs and sit and learn. or i can search for a job with my qualificatins that pays maybe 40k. What would you do? !

  7. This is now a common issue with food stamps. You can no longer rely on a letter in the mail. You should know when your case will expire, and go down there beforehand.

  8. That is what happens when the budget get cut and there are less workers. i think the Governor needs to take responsibility. he claims he balanced the budget on the backs of workers.

remember when Romney and Ryan get elected, your food stamps and medicaid will be eliminated. Think before you vote

  9. while we are talking about different agencies
i was wondering if anyone else had no luck gettinmg through to the transportion department. i spent the whole day calling with no luck. i work from 9:00 to 5:00 so i can’t even go there yet my sons bus time needs to be moved and i don’t know what to do

  10. So this is what happens when the govt is in charge of anything. And now, ladies and gentlemen, ObamaCare is going to get implemented in 2014, and THIS IS HOW THE DOCTORS OFFICE WILL FUNCTION.

When will we all wake up and realize that govt doesn’t work. When we wait on line for our food from the govt, and wait on line for our healthcare from the govt, the govt bureacrats JUST DON’T CARE.

Welcome to the new world of govt dependency and chronic poverty.

  11. For those of us with extenuating circumstances, “getting a job to supplement your income” is not so simple. Think of the yeshivaman who’s wife has been supporting the household takes ill and can no longer work. Think of the parents blessed with twins and triplets. Think of the families who have a sick child and have to spend all day tending to them. Also keep in mind people who have simply not been blessed with work in this severely depressed economy. “Getting a job” is sometimes not so simple. Being on foodstamps is usually done out of necessity, not because the family benefitting from them are proud of it.

  12. In bentching we ask for to be fed no through “amtnas boser v’dam”. So why are food stamps the norm? How about encouraging people to get jobs that pay enough that they’d not need the assistance in the first place, no?

  13. This is what happens when you scream to cut your taxes… they cut public employees to save money. You get what you pay for…… stop complaining it is a freebee that some one else is paying for.

  14. I have also been waiting for a response since June. I was really hoping that we would receive in time for yom tov, but now we will have to go away for yom tov instead. I feel bad, my kids so wanted to be at our shul for simchas torah. Maybe next year I won’t qualify anymore, G-d willing.

  15. The point of this article was not to discuss who gets it. We love all those smart people out there that comment just get a job! Wow that was an intelligent statement. I am working 2 jobs, and paying off my husbands schooling some of us are working and still need assistance.

  16. Received and returned recertification papers in June. No benefits this month. Called and left message with assigned caseworker, no response.
TLS, thank you for the report so at least I know it’s not just me.
