Township Inspector Could Face Charges After Boxing In School Bus With Children Aboard

EXCLUSIVE: A Township Inspector could face charges after boxing in and holding up a School Bus full of children today, TLS has learned. The incident occurred during the afternoon run, when a School Bus with children aboard turned into the oncoming lane of traffic on Monmouth Avenue, in order to drop children off in middle of the roadway.

While the bus was on the angle in middle of Monmouth Avenue, a Township Inspector, driving a Township truck, pulled head-on to the bus, blocking it in.

The Inspector got out of his vehicle, lit up a cigarette and called police, according to eye witnesses. The Inspector also took photos of the bus.

Police arrived and settled the dispute, after the bus was blocked in for about 15 minutes.

Although no charges were immediately filed against the Inspector, TLS has learned that the school may consider filing charges against the Township employee.

Sources say, charges could include child endangerment, misuse of Township property and other charges. TLS-CCP.

  1. i agree with the township inspector, school bus drivers drive like animals as if they own the road. let the school bus drivers get put in their place for once!!!!!

  2. to #2 you are absolutely wrong! any one with a little sechel will know that the bus driver wasonly doing it for the childrens’ sake! and i definetly agree wioth #1 the guy has got to go!!

  3. to #2 you are absolutely wrong! any one with a little sechel will know that the bus driver was only doing it for the childrens’ sake! and i definetly agree wioth #1 the guy has got to go!!

  4. Your headline is misleading. When you said “boxing” I thought you meant fighting. I also thought you were referring to a bus inspector not a building inspector. Please learn how to express yourself clearly.
That said, the inspector overstepped his jurisdiction. His job is buildings not buses.

  5. I am a parent of one of the children that was on the bus… I am furious! I am thankful to have a bus driver that is one of the most responsible, caring and devoted drivers in this town. I will consult with my attorney for all possible options on how to bring this inspector “down” – he is not a police officer…..

  6. Why are children being dropped off in the middle of the roadway? Shouldn’t they be dropped off at the curb? Seems very dangerous. I think that’s what the inspector was trying to do. Stop a dangerous action. That’s also why he called the police. The school should be charging the bus driver with endangering children not the inspector.

  7. First they pull over Hatzalah going on Emergency calls now they are endangering our children. Even those privileged to serve with badges and honor aren’t above the law

  8. the bus blocked traffic so no lunatic can run over a child. even my bus many-many years ago did this in ocean township when stopped on a busy street. it was greatly appreciated by my parents and other parents.
yes its illegal to do such a thing, but the wacko over-reacted and took laws (he isnt allowed to enforce) into his own hands.

Looks like this guy needs a cold shower, to curb his vigilantism, and to keep his nose in his own business, and not minding others.

IN THIS CASE, I AM WITH THE BUS DRIVER 100%

  9. when a bus stops at an angle across the road, in an a tempt to block cars from passing its lights, their red flashing lights cannot be seen by oncoming cars, so in all reality a driver who thinks they are doing good is really failing your kids. If the laws and bus designers wanted they would put the lights on the angles not straight on. This happened to me just today, now I knew the lights were on, but could not see them due to the angle the bus stopped at.
the answer is simple, the police department need to do a bus sting and write dozens of tickets asap.

  10. What in heavens name did he want the bus driver to do!! I bet this inspector has no kids people in this town have a clue to drive at least he put his bus in the way to protect this kid.2nd he could have hit one of the kids getting off the bus he is not a police officer he could have wrote the plate number down and called not put all the kids on the bus endanger. He needs to grow up bad inspector.

  11. To all of you who are calling safety I call upon you and every one else in town to start a ticket blitz every time you see a township inspector pulling up on the wrong side of the street to a construction site, every time u see them parking on a unpaved surface, every time you see them parking in a fire lane at their offices, everytime u see them parked in a 30 min slot at municipal building, everytime you walk in and hear a employee use foul langauge …. Get the details and file a complaint and issue a ticket this dept must start running properly!! The time has come for the head of the inspection to take control and not run away

  12. There is a new shtick recently by bus drivers, instead of pulling up to the curb to drop of kids like they are trained to do, they decided that it is safer to aggressively block traffic by turning half way into oncoming traffic. This is wrong and illegal. They must follow the manual not arbitrarily make up rules that fit their temperament and mood at the time.
i am not condoning the inspectors despicable, unprofessional behavior at all.

  13. Shame on the inspector some of them think they can do what they want in township trucks they park in a handicap spot to go get lunch they block fire hydrant time to stop it

  14. Wonderfully said, Hello. The arrogance of this inspector is beyond belief. Let’s take the arrogance out of these civil SERVANTS (look it up if you don’t know what that means) who feel that they are qbove the law.

  15. Thinking back several years ago, I still recall the first time I saw a school bus driver stopping in the middle of the street in an angular position. As the bus didn’t appear to have a tire or mechanical issue, I was initially stumped as to his/her rationale. But since I was anyway stopped due to school bus flashing the red lights, I took a few seconds to constructively ponder the matter.. and Bingo!.. I figured it out!!

This positioning was specifically intended for the purpose of making it difficult for another vehicle to pass the bus – on EITHER side of the road. I was truly impressed with the thoughtfulness and obvious caring on the part of the driver. After all – he is, for the duration of the bus ride, entrusted with protecting our most precious youngsters. I shudder to think If g-d forbid some maniac in a pickup truck were to injure one of our children on their way on/off the bus, and the probable blaming of the driver that he could’ve/should’ve exercised more caution.. All I could say was THANK YOU to the driver for doing everything he could to provide safety for our children!

Additionally, I felt that the driver was doing the oncoming vehicles a huge favor. We all know that unfortunately there are those on the roads that either speed above the limit, are distracted by a cellphone, have the sun glaring in their eyes, etc.. and fail to notice the 2 flashing lights in time – and commit the “5-point” offense of passing a school bus when it is prohibited. Since it is ILLEGAL (even for township employees) to continue driving – this extra reminder should only be applauded.

On an aside, can someone advise the public if this incident took place during the employees lunch break, as apparently there was no(?) workload awaiting him while he tended to this important matter. If this episode occurred before/after his break, then I fully expect the human resources director to investigate where our paid-for human resource energies are being spent, and how many other such blocks of time are being diverted for non-public-works-related matters.

My hopes aren’t high that the employee or his supervisor will apologize to the families and affected residents for this latest outburst, but proper training on how to apply proper judgment (and behavior) when holding up a busload of children is certainly in order.

  16. Can someone tell pls what time inspection is sopose to open bec i always notice some of the inspectors eating breakfast after 930 I’m afraid this guy opened up a can of warms on the rest of the group

  17. I agree as far as people say this inspector misused his position. I have been a school bus driver in Lakewood and the officer who handles safety issues with bus drivers and school bus company’s have told us that it is our right to block oncoming traffic to keep the kids on the bus safe when getting on and off the bus. The traffic officer told us we are permitted to do this because so many people run the red lights on the school buses. People don’t realize when those lights are on it is just like a red light at a street corner and you have to by law STOP. and to the people saying that Lakewood bus drivers drive like they own the road…Well we have to because of the way the rest of the people in the town drive on the road. They are rude and obnoxious, don’t stop or even slow down when the lights are on or give right of way to a 45 foot long 20000 to 35000 LB vehicle with the most precious cargo (your children) on it.

  18. I don’t know if its legal but I agree with the busses stopping and blocking the traffic when dropping off children. I see every day drivers completely ignore the flashing red lights , even when the bus driver honks at them , they are just spaced out and drive by anyway .

  19. The reason a bus driver stops on an angle to block traffic at times is because there are many children that get off on that stop that might live on all 4 corners. If a driver doesn’t block all traffic …. I need not say more. I’m appalled at this inspectors behavior! FOR SHAME!!

  20. This inspector has had numerous complaints filed against him but nothing has been done. He has been accused of (moderated) etc. Do we have to wait until he really goes of the deep end?

  21. To lawless town, have you read the manual?? My husband is currently taking his cdl exams. You have no idea what is involved in driving a bus and apparently, the taking up the entire roadway drop off is permitted for the safety of the children not illegal.

  22. INSPECTORS BECOME VIGILANTY

MAYBE SOME OF US SHOULD START TELLING THE LOCAL INSPECTORS “NO” TO THEIR WAY OF DOING BUI$INE$$.

what if anyother citizen did this? The cops would have ticketed the person blocking in the bus and would charge them for unlawful apprehending children., Public disturbance……

ALL I KNOW IS WHEN I NEEDED THE INSPECTORS HELP TO PUT PRESURE ON MY LANDLORD – IT WAS ALMOST IMPOSSIBILE. TOOK MONTHS!!!!

  23. Thats it ..lets get rid of township inspections..then all your homes can go through the county system..and see how many of those homes get approved for multifamily usage

  24. I think ts unsafe for the bus driver to pull on an angle, how can you see his flashing lights they are not facing traffic at all when doing this. I think the professional and expert Sgt. Work from Traffic and Safety really needs to enlighten all of us on the proper way a school bus should stop to pick up and drop off kids.
Sgt. Work if your reading this as I know you are, please submit something to the rest of our readers please provide the readers with the truth.

  25. WOW!!!! Last year you were all out to hang the bus drivers for doing the same thing, blocking the streets to let off the children. The inspector couldn’t get by because the school bus was blocking the road! He called the police to have the driver checked as to why he was blocking the road. At no time were the children in danger, they were safe inside the bus. What you need to do is decide what you want. Is it now OK for the bus driver to brake the law by them deciding when where and how to block a road. I still think that if it were a frum driver that blocked the bus the comments would be about how bad the bus driver is.

  26. The comments against the driver are just so typical of bench warmers. When’s the last time you were entrusted with the lives of 40 plus kids, multiple times a day? And had to constantly deal with aggressive drivers, passing you on all sides cuz they’re in a ‘rush’?
What the driver did was 100% correct. The safety of the children is priority number 1.

  27. It is ilegal to pull up your car to another car in the street even police can’t do that unless they are chasing a suspect that is called a moter vehicle accident and if its not by mistake yes that is endagering the welfare of children, careless driving, reckless driving, prob also going to close to a bus when the lights are on, driving on the wrong side of traffic
Throw the book at him he is making a bad name for township employees
I think just like we have the employee of the month we should have the worst employee of the month and the employee with the most complaints should get a week non paid vacation
He has too much of a history here!

  28. he had no right to to what he did he should be fired today !
he IS NOT a police officer and can not control traffic !
he misused township property and put all the children and the driver in danger the poor parents who were waiting at the bus stop
mayor miller lay him off now !

  29. I am not justifying what the inspector did but the solution to aggressive and illegal driving is the police doing their job and ticketing aggressive and illegal drivers! I am in Lakewood for almost 30 years and I can tell you first hand it is scary to drive in town. We are not doing anyone a favor by pressuring the police not to ticket. I fear for the lives of our town. There is not a day that goes by when I am not cut of … on both sides, have to watch cares go through stop signs, have 50% of their car stick into RT 9 (or any corner) while trying to turn, pass countless people “schmoozing” on their cell phone or reading their text messages. Someone is going to get killed if these violations are not aggressively enforced! This goes for the bus drivers too. They they tear down the streets as if they were driving a motorcycle without regard for anyone. How on earth can they make a split second stop? I have personally stopped driving in town Bein Hasedorim, in morning and afternoon school runs, and on Erev Shabbos… I can’t wait for Bein Hazemanim when the roads are normal again!

  30. If the Inspector doesnt like are town he should get out of here and not enjoing are hard earned tax money. And # 1 we by now know already its always the bus driver fault! Right? I guess you have no idea what it responsebilty it involves and means to drive kids. Maybe get your self behind the bus wheel and see for yourself first hand instead of just complaining the whole day. I dont know which company it was but even if it is illigal unfortunally here in lakewood this has to be done for are kids safety. How many time have I stoped to let kids of and poeple just drive by talking on the phone and so forth. May you are familier with that from your own experiance. Especcialy drivers from NY that are not so familiar with the strickt rules here in NJ have passed me numerous times. This inspector shoud rather stick to his job instead policing around time. The time he wasted there should be taken off his pay check. We not paying him for smoking and stoping school busses. I think I made my self clear!!!!!!

  31. Editor: just let us know what the police did when they got there, did they say that the driver was wrong or not. By posting the end of the story we could eliminate most of the comments with everyone’s 2 cents about whos right and whos wrong.

  32. “…when a School Bus with children aboard turned into the oncoming lane of traffic on …”

The bus crossed the center line and into the on coming traffic. GIVE THE BUS DRIVER A TICKET!!!!!! Plain and simple violation of the law.

  33. “…when a School Bus with children aboard turned into the oncoming lane of traffic on …”

  34. To # 40,

Are you for real or just stam nuts? You really don’t drive in town during bein hasedorim?? Are you one of those people that are also scared to make left turn on a busy intersection???

I’m an excellent driver and I have no hesitations about driving at ANY time of the day – unless I’m expecting major delays due to heavy traffic volume..

    I mean.. c’mmon!!

  35. TLS why are you leaving the inspectors name out(why are you protecting him ? if he indeed did something wrong let it be known to all and why are you leaving out the name of the school? is that loshon hora?

  36. this is the way they do it in ny it is the safest and what in the world was the inspector trying to do did i miss something som1 said something abt he wasn’t dropping off kids and just blocking the road for no reason???? som1 pls clarify this story and say what really happened thank you

ps!! i worked very hard on the spelling lol

  37. this inspecter spends most of his time in court enforceing voilations with glee so i guess with all that time in court he feels like a policeman maybe e can start representing the police dept in court since he hasnt done a building inspection in quite a while

  38. why didn’t the inspector get a ticket for being on the wrong side of the road? The bus was their to prevent people from going and c’v hitting a kid!
