FULL VIDEO: The Township Committee Thursday evening clearly expressed their feelings, as well as the majority of the town’s feelings regarding the proposed closure of Lakewood’s main Post Office. Presenting the plan to the Committee, was USPS real estate division representative Rich Hancock, who stated his intentions of consolidating the Post Office to the Swarthmore location was simply due to economics.
Despite USPS’s explanations, the Township Committee however strongly condemned the action saying it would tremendously affect thousands of residents, many of whom do not drive and would be unable to make the trip to Swarthmore.
Mayor Miller together with Liaison Committeeman Meir Lichtenstien called for a resolution to lift restrictions on requiring the Township to use USPS for Township business, saying if they weren’t conforming, neither should the Township have to. That resolution says the Mayor, will be sent around the State calling for all municipalities and towns to join them in fighting the USPS requirements.
Deputy Mayor told Hancock to pass the message over to his superiors that there was ‘extreme displeasure’ amongst the Committee over the decision, and called for another resolution to formally condemn the USPS for their lack of consideration.
Langert said, instead of focusing on how the economics are an issue, focus on how to make the Post Office into a plus, and perhaps add another CPU station downtown.

Good luck trying to fight the Federal Govt.
why don’t you have the public’s comments posted from the Twp. meeting?
great place for a museum—maybe—
will the building be up for rent or only for sale?
Let them open a store with po boxes and a counter and sell the building to the township to make a parking lot. Or sell it to the public but put a dead restriction that it has to stay on the tax roll for the next 100 years so it dosnt go to a school or shul. And it must be used for retail business and office.
i am not happy with the post office closing either. but lets face the facts. USPS is losing billions every year and that is taxpayer money. when lakewood wanted to cut , they cut EMS with disregard. i believe that this was a good move. because you can only have what you can afford to pay for. same things should go for all taxpayer funded entities.
because a few people who cannot afford cars (many of whom are illegals ) want an office in thier area that they can walk to they taxpayers should have to pay ?
i am going to miss it. but i agree with the FED govererment. SHUT IT DOWN IF ITS COSTING THE TAXPAYER MONEY.
Let the building go to somethin that will add to the tax base. Maybe other place handle lines
This building would make a great super market!
It should at least have a a parking lot. I know there’s one across the street, but what if you have to mail a heavy package, and you have to cross at the intersection, it’s not so convenient. Maybe some other business could be run from the building including postal services.
The building has a public parking lot on the rt 88 side always empty ppl just don’t realise it!
The post office just like the federal govt is BROKE , if they were not an quasi govt agency they would be out of business. poorly run with no idea that with technology in this day and age would erode the need to mail most things such as bills , e mail has replaced letters and social media has kept most friends & family in touch on a daily basis without the use of a 44 cent stamp
