TAKE NOTICE: Be alert when driving through the downtown area tomorrow morning, or you can find yourself in a head-on collision. Beginning Wednesday morning, 1st Street will become one way from West to East (Clifton to Lexington). Also tomorrow morning, Lexington Avenue from 1st Street to Main Street, will become a one way Street Southbound.
The latest 1st Street change, will force NJ Transit buses to make a right turn out of the terminal, and another right turn onto Lexington Avenue, in order to reach Main Street. Previously, the buses turned left onto Clifton Avenue.
The changes, is the latest of a series of changes of a master plan announced last year, aimed to ease the congestion in the Downtown area. TLS.

I know what you mean but no one who reads your article has a clue. Obviously you don’t mean Lexington is becoming a one way from Clifton to LEXINGTON, you meant to write 1st street will become a one way eastbound from Clifton to Lexington, AND Lexington will also become a one way going southbound from 1st to Main.

Help i am getting a bike this place is so complicated every day some thing else ,no left turn ,no right turn, do not enter,one way …soon they will turn clifton into a pedestrian mall like times square and then we will really need to get a horse and buggy like the amish …
This is stupid. It is going to cause more traffic issues. This means now that any trucks delivering to NPGS will have to come from Clifton Avenue and make a left onto 1st Street. It would have been much simpler and smarter to have the buses exit onto Main street instead of 1st.
now 1 and 2nd will be going in the same direction?
people will stop shopping on 2nd as many times we had to go to first and around through clifton. NOW we will have to go to Rt 88.
I am staying away from this mess.

You guys did an EXCELLENT job on Route 9 but what’s up with the Clifton Avenue changes. What is the problem that your trying to fix with the 1st Street changes? (Do any of the engineers actually live and spend time in Lakewood at all?)
the downtown is great. why must you find the fastest way to escape it? park IN A LOT, and walk around, it’s very enjoyable. Also when driving, LOOK AT THE SIGNS. there are new stop signs which have been under garbage bags for a week. Now they will be live, so stay the same by obeying the signs.
downtown has been a traffic mess for a while. all changes will take a little getting used to, then all will be fine. it cant really get worse.
i just hope there will be some tolerance from the police with regard to ticketing those who REALLY make a mistake.
im almost used to 13th and 14th avenues in Boro Park being one way. its just a matter of time.
Hey! I lived here when 2nd street was a two way street from Forest all the way to Monmouth. I remember going down it the wrong way when they first changed it to a one way street. I think I won’t be going downtown too much any more, not that I have been lately any way.
why make changes to accomdate the busses. if you dont want busses going left onto clifton then just post a sign as they exit the bus station . why do cars have to suffer because of the busses. why fix it when it aint broke?
now – if they just make Clifton Ave 1 way in town & 4th st 1 way clifton. That would help loads & no left turn from 3 St.
With this plan we will not have to sell the Post Office:
First St one way from Clifton to Lex, and you have to make a right on Lex.
Lex one way from First to Main, and you have to make a right.
Main one way from Lex to Clifton, and you have to make a right.
Clifton one way from Main to First, and you have to make a right.
This way, the Post Office will be surrounded by an endless loop of cars and no one in his right mind will buy it.
if the issue is nj buses why cant they just turn around in the HUGE lot and exit on main?????????????? go figure your taxes at work
I just went to “downtown” Lakewood today (an area I like to avoid because of the traffic and lack of parking), but today was a mess! I couldnt turn anywhere & getting to my destination took forever. I simply cannot understand why they would further complicate the already congested downtown area. As much as I hated driving there before today, I hate it now even more. I feel bad for the stores – who will undoubtly lose business over this new mess. Who are the people responsible for reccomending these changes and why werent we the residents asked to vote on this? What a mess…
