Pearl Blau Learning Center Teachers Go On Strike, Affects Hundreds Of Children

teacher_strikeFIRST REPORT: Sources tell TLS that Pearl Blau Learning Center teachers have gone on strike today after not getting paid in months. This decision from the teachers comes following failed negotiations which took place last night between the teachers and program directors. The in-school, non-federally-funded learning program for special ed programs is comprised of approximately 45 teachers and will affect several hundred children.

In an email from someone involved with the negotiations it was written, “The teachers were very nice and felt bad for the children which require their services. But it came to a point that they had to go on strike”.

Approximately 300 children in many schools, will be affected by the strike.

The teachers were reportedly not paid since May, 2010. TLS.

  1. Anyone who owes tuition should not eat out or vacation untill they pay up every last cent.
All mosdos are obligated to open their books to their parent body if they fall behind on their obligations.

  2. We see CHUSH from Willyburg comes here & makes appeals at least once a year, & pay a high percentage to the collectors & yet we don’t support owr very own.
See Yoreh Deyah Hilchos Tzedokah & know our neighbours & our town come first next time CHUSH comes please write your checks to Peral Blau, That may have helped this sad situation.

  3. I know of at least one lakewood kid that goes to CHUSH,
it sounds like you have a PERSONAL agenda against chush for some unknown reason, if your agenda is because halucha there is no need to mention about percentage going to collectors, as most if not all mosdos (including lakewood) pay their collectors a percentage (a good fundraiser gets higher percentage)

maybe we should stop giving vaad harabunim etc. Or how about all kiruv org. Even if they have a local office their kiruv students are NOT local, or how about cutting back in ur spending on pizza, entertainent, summer vacation etc.?

  4. While there are many amazing organizations in our town including 8onei Olam Tomchei shabbos Tiferes Devorah Lkallah etc no one absolutely no one should give tzedaka to anyone or anyplace befor paying your tuition. Don’t rely on me. Look in any hilchos tzedaka sefer or ask any competent Rav. We have to change our mindset about tuition if we ever hope to resolve this problem.

  5. As a parent with a child in the Pearl Blau program I have been current almost all the time. However for most people the additional cost of Pearl Blau is beyond their means. The cost of Pearl Blau is above and beyond any tuition you pay. In the current economy with more people than ever behind on tuition it is not surprising that they are behind on Pearl Blau too. The need for a central fundraising effort for all of Lakewoods Mosdos should be made a priority.

  6. Even if parents are up to date with paying their dues to Pearl Blau there are additional expenses that need to be covered. Administration, Secretaries etc.

  7. If every family lakewood would give $18 it would rescue the school from sinking. Its a gevaldiga gevaldiga mitzvah , nu nu someone should pick up the drive, i am sure the rosh yeshiva would support this effort

  8. To Loshon Hora.
How do you know that the Chush collectors are getting “a high percentage” Did you work there previously?

Even if they are, are you ready to stand in Satmar all day and beg for donations? How much would you expect to be paid for that demeaning work?
Finally I love when everyone in Lakewood starts screaming how we have to support our own moisdos first.
If people in NY started doing that most Moisdos in Lakewood would have to close as we take in from out of town much more then we give out.

  9. To #7 & # 16:
If you know one kid from Lakewood in CHUSH I cannot discredit you although it suprises me. That said the kid probably lives in NY at least for now or his parents did at one point. If he doesn’t live in Lakewwod although his parents do you may want to learn atl east the mechaber & RAMO b4 challeenging me. At most we would have to fund the difference between the what the parent’s pay & the cost of that one child, according to the list in Shulchan Oruch.
AS for the collectors percentage a son-in-law of one of the previous collectors told me about it. As for Lakewood Rabbi E. has never taken a percentage, nor changed the name for more money, because he already took money for the name.
As for all other tzedokos you may well be right. You are invited to open a Shulchan Oruch & learn it, or even Ahavas Chesed of the Chofetz Chaim.
BTW collectors may take a salary al pi halacha, but again you have to make sure your neighbours & town have parnoso first.
As for NY funding Lakewood, many have children & grandchildren in those mosdos which come first., on the list family are b4 neighbours, & BTW family also has an order.

  10. i dont think the commentor is wrong by saying many in lkwd direct their tzdoka budget out of town instead of intown
their is a halacho of aneyi aircho kodem and the same is with mosdos our local mosdos shouldnt have to close when millions of dollars are channeld for out of town mosdos every out of town yeshiva has a parlor meeting or melava malka etc and nothing wrong with that but we toshavim of lkwd need to have our priorties in order
whether the person raising funds for chush gets a cut or not isnt relevant hes entitled to make a living just as the directors of pearl blau are entitled to take a salary for their time and efforts to raise money

  11. Most people in Lakewood do not have enough income to cover their expenses completely, including tuition and Pearl Blau. People have large families and tutoring prices are prohibitive, not to mention other therapies that these children sometimes need. Very few people pay full tuition in Lakewood! Even if they did, full tutiion is a fraction of what it costs to educate our kids. Our mosdos never have enough money because our community cannot really support itself.

  12. all tutoring at pblc is subsidized by community donations, in an effort to make one-on-one tutoring more affordable. parents that pay up consistently are a MINORITY and the donations from the community have been tromendously diminished, therefore pearl blau cant keep up! the local askan who commented that the $ doesnt go directly to the teachers, should verify his info before making a public statement. the exact opposite , is true. pearl blau boasts a very small administration, receiving minimal salaries to ensure the $ goes DIRECTLY to teachers! I think that the community needs to value the work pblc does and show more support with substantial donations, so they can continue saving lives everyday!!

  13. Pearl Blau is not a mosad, it works within the mosdos as private tutoring. It is far cheaper than any private tutor charges, and the kids usually benefit tremendously. And because it is done at school, there is nothing to worry about suppertime issues or any after school activity. However, some people feel that is it an extra expense above tuition, for which they are paying for already (we hope). They still deserve to be paid like any other job that gets paid. These are very special people, like any other rebbe or morah!

  14. As someone who once raised money for a lakewood family who needed extra help after a simcha vd”l

I called several chesed org. For help ALL brooklyn org. I called gave some help one more one less, from lakewood we got help ONLY from one “private” chesed fund, the towns org. Gave different excuses to push off and never send a penny! And yes the nicest donation for a LAKEWOOD FAMILY came from A BROOKLYN ORG.!

  15. please be aware that aniyey yerushalyim have the same DIN as aniyay ircha. Ask a real posek (not a do it yourself -er) and he will tell you. We should give to all who ask and beg Hashem to help all yidden with parnossa issues. It is in HIS hands to solve our financial problems. Stop relying on the goyish idea of kochee bi otzem yadi. Chas vishalom to stop giving tzedaka to our brothers in need.

  16. People don’t realize the value of pearl blau. It gives children the confidence they need to excel or even stay in a classroom. From someone who has personal experience would like to thank the teachers and staff who are the most selfless group of people out there.

  17. Talmidai chachomim marbim Shalom Ba’olam.Lakewood has plenty of talmidai chachomim why don’t they stand up and offer to learn with the kids who need allitle push?

  18. #20 if you know so well that the money goes directly to the teachers. Many PB parents will tell you that they are up to date with their payments. So where did the past 3 months of money go (assuming last years money went to the teachers) if not to administrative costs. No teacher got paid. If you know so much explain where the money went.

  19. I think you have great intentions, but the same goes for every organization that is suffering. Maybe I can afford $18 but multiply that by the 100s of organizations and personal collectors that come to your door and I would definitely need to get a second job on top of my already full time professional job. It is not so simple! If it was nobody would have financial issues. Good luck to all in these trying economic times.

  20. The economic times might be trying in the rest of the world, but Lakewood is already on shaky economic ground. There are a large number of non-wage-earning parents with large families. Do the math: who is paying their bills? There are VERY FEW families where the income actually covers the expenses. These families are also expected to give large amounts of tzedaka to cover other families’ costs. It is a system that cannot sustain itself.

  21. #28, i already stated that the amount charged to parents does NOT cover the costs of payroll. community donations are needed to keep the tutoring affordable. so if a couple of parents paid up where does that get them? how about all those who have tromendous outstanding balances and seemingly have no intention of paying up? if you’d research it you would find out that many people are going about leading their high lifestyles and toss their pearl blau bill in the mail without a moments thought that this organization saved their child from embarassment, lagging behind scholastically, and gave them the confidence and tools to ensure a better future for themselves. Bare in mind that minimal administrative staff is needed in order to run a complex organization (a tutoring network within the lakewood schools) like this and they deserve to get paid just like teachers do and are waiting just as long for their paycheck. You seem to be convinced of your stance, maybe challenge the organization to show u how little money has come in since the school year started, they have nothing to hide. You wont have the question anymore as to where the money went, and you may also be a little more careful in the future about posting invalid “bad rap” about valuable people and organizations.

  22. I am one of the collectors who occassionally goes for chush. For traveling to Lakewood from Williamsburg 1.5 hours & back 1.5 hours and approx 4 hours of busha and tircha there I get $250. Do the math.

Answer they don’t get money from many parents so there was no money to use, it comes from donations.

I told you to open a Shulchan Oruch you will find they are after aniyey ircha not the same who are after you shchinim, the way Lakewood is built we may all be shchinim & aniyei ircha NJ, that will need a poisek though.

Doubtful because I ahve raised money many times in Lakewood, and people are very generous so are organizations, but that does not change hilchos tzedakah in Shulchan Oruch.
You all may have feelings & opinions, but Shulchan Oruch has the final say. BTW no where does it say who may collect, & thou shall not give. It tells you that if you have what to give who gets priority. That was & ismy point.
Let us see if people from Lakewood go to Willbourg & push big posters to save Pearl Blau, lets see how many nickels & dimes & possibly quaters come in.

  24. We can do like Monsey and bring the public school teachers into a diffrent building and get goverment help. I was one of the people that worked hard getting this done in monsey but PB works there own ways!!!!!!and does not like help……old timers being old timers

    NO one home…..its clearly sad!

  25. To Loshon Hora you quote the Shulchan Orach so many times.
Where in the Shulchan Orach did you get the heter to spread Loshon Hora on another mosad?
Your reply makes no sense. Its very simple, if word gets out that people in Lakewood are only donating to Lakewood moisdos, then people from NY and other places will stop supporting Lakewood moisdos and we will ultimately lose much more then we give.
