Man Finds Krill In Kosher Sardines Can

krill sardines tls_wmPHOTO: In September, the O.U. issued the following statement regarding Krill found in sardines. “Brunswick Sardines in Olive Oil, have been found to contain Krill, a small crustacean similar in appearance to a small shrimp, in some cans. Sardines are a small herring and are a natural seafood product. The main components of the herring diet are Krill and other zoo-plankton present in the ocean in which it lives. Due to the feeding habits of the fish, Krill may occasionally be present in a tin of sardines. Krill in the stomachs can bust out and appear in the can. This is a very rare occurrence. Bumble Bee has logged approximately 20 incidences in reports from consumers out of over 20 million cans. Kosher consumers who find krill should not eat the sardines and should report the problem to the manufacturer, including all production and date codes.”

Yesterday evening, TLS received the attached picture from a reader saying “I  saw Krill, a shrimp like creature in  3 Brunswick sardines cans with an o-u (made in Canada). I brought them to Rabbi Yaakov Reisman, Rav of Agudah of Far Rockaway(currently has 2 cans in his fridge) and to Rabbi Yosef Eisen (head of Vaad 5 Towns). SHRIMP WAS CONFIRMED!!”

“Today, Rabbi Eisen took sardines off store shelves all over, and National emails were sent out to Kashrus agencies across the country. Signs are now hanging around rockaway 5 towns. People are urged to take back to store for full refund”.

As stated by the OU, Kosher consumers who find krill should not eat the sardines and should report the problem to the manufacturer, including all production and date codes.”

  1. This is just proof that the Gedolei Hador should be listened to. (not that we should need proof) Krill is the typical crustacean that eats anisakis. Even if the krill gets digested, it still leaves behind the anisakis parasite which is assur. Most sardines were found to be among the varieties that have anisakis and was listed on the lists of fish to be avoided.
