Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles Responds to Your ‘Ask The Mayor’ Questions: Flooding

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Question:

I’m glad and thankful there has been some action on the corner of Rt. 9 near Henry st in creating a place for the new storm drain. However, being somewhat knowledgeable in the areas storm drains, Henry st. And cedar st. East of Rt. 9 are hooked up to an old system which hasn’t been serviced for years. We therefore consistently get flooded and there’s no place for the water to go. I’ve tried reaching out to that department several times but had no success.

Thanks

Response from Mayor Coles:

Good morning,

The township will send out a truck to clean out all the inlets.

Ray

  1. Why must it take a letter to the Mayor to get something done? Why couldn’t the department that he says he called several times listen to him and help him?

i would suggest that when people call a department to ask for help, they should ask for the name of the person they spoke to. If nothing gets done, you, as the Mayor of the town, should put something in place to discipline that person or dept. that ignore requests. There needs to be accountability

  2. Yes “Accountability,” as the author of the question above, you are correct. This is an ongoing issue which has plagued this block for years and the Township hasn’t done a thing. I doubt they’ll even come do anything…

  3. I think that part of the problem is that large items somehow end up down the sewer.
I personally saw those advertisement signs on the floor next to the sewer.
If I am walking then I will move away the sign. Sometimes near a construction job you will find large pieces of junk on the sewer and also on the side of the sewer.
Also tree branches end up right near the sewer. A lot of these items are able to slip into the sewer sideways.
One day take a good look and you will see that on the side the sewer has a large hole.
I do agree that a bicycle 🚲 can’t go down the sewer because the hole is not big enough.
